An Augusta man was killed this afternoon after he lost control of his vehicle on Mike Padgett Highway.

Gregory Zurkin, 58, was traveling southbound on the road approaching Country Place Road when his right side tires left the roadway and caused him to lose control, said Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald.

“He got back on the road, hit a ditch, overturned at least one time and he was ejected from his vehicle,” McDonald said.

Zurkin was pronounced dead about 4:45 p.m., McDonald said.

This highway is a killer.

This highway is a killer. Heavy traffic of all kinds, most going over the limit, many pulling out with never a signal ever. I only travel this road when absolutely necessary and pity the people who must use it daily. If you don't already drive like a maniac, you will!

The road had nothing to do

The road had nothing to do with it. When somebody runs off the side of the road, it is the driver's fault. I don't run off the side of the road, do you? It's either driver inattention or speed- which is 100% caused by the driver.

Once again another life is

Once again another life is lost on this stretch of highway. When I came past 4H club road and saw the flashing blue lights I just knew someone trying to turn into Castle Pines Subdivision had been hit. I can't tell you how many horrific wrecks have happened right there. I have to say I was quite surprised to see that the lack of a turning lane had nothing to do with this accident. He had to be traveling at an insane speed to have travelled across the shoulder of the road, across the entrance lane of Country Place drive, crossed the median, then across the exit lane and ended up in the woods. Though it wouldn't have helped in this case, a turning lane has got to be put in. When they started repaving last summer, I thought finally! But they didn't widen the road at all. If the DOT was forced to pay the families of those killed on this road because there is no turning lane, I would think they would get creative and find the money to widen it. And yes, people need to slow down, but even if everyone travelled the speed limit, without a turning lane, wrecks would still happen.

Most of the accidents are

Most of the accidents are caused by excessive speed and tailgating, which is always the driver's fault. If people wouldn't use it as a raceway, it would be fine.

If you want to race come on

If you want to race come on over to Evans and race on William Few Raceway, and don't worry about the law, as they don't have any place to hide. And even with two stop signs, the folks coming out of Snob Hill don't even slow down.
