Two Burke County pupils were hit by an oncoming car this morning while trying to board their school bus.

The children, 5 and 7 years old, were taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment, according to a Georgia State Patrol dispatcher.

The accident occurred about 7 a.m. while they were crossing River Road in Burke County.

The driver of the vehicle was Dennis Mulhorn, 44, of Evans, the dispatcher said. He is charged with improper passing of a school bus and failure to exercise due care - both misdemeanors. The dispatcher said one of the children had been discharged from the hospital but the other remains in intensive care.

Their names were not available.

I really feel for the children. DRIVERS!!!!!!!! Your schedule is NOT more important that the safety of our children getting on and off a schools bus. If you are not sure what to do when you see the bus lights flashing THEN STOP!!!!!! It might be your child whose life is saved.

So Mr. Important had

So Mr. Important had somewhere to be and the bus and kids were in his way? Can't be bothered to stop for the bus like the rest of us do? Hate to hear that it's only a misdemeanor...that doesn't seem right when a child is in intensive care because this moron was careless.

I forgot to ask where was mom or dad? A child this old needs to be hand carried to the bus and placed on it.

The fact of the matter is

The fact of the matter is that it was the drivers fault according to the police report. It was rainy and dark at 7:00 this morning. Which means that the driver should have been paying attention to what he was doing. To those that think this should be more than a misdemeanors ... I agree.

Hey Johnny, why don't you try to be civil? You're acting like a jerk here, for no apparent reason.

As a driver of a school bus I

As a driver of a school bus I see this more times than I would like to. We as School bus drivers try to turn in tag numbers of cars that run our stop signs but some of the counties will not do anything. According to the driver hand book this is a 6 point violation on their linces. If the public would pay more attention things like this would not happen.

These kids should have been

These kids should have been supervised by an adult(the mother who was inside the house.) Question...Did the kids start across the road prior to the bus stopping? I travel that road and know that it is not safe for a 5 and 7 year old to be out there alone.
