Airline waives fee for church in Evans to send supplies to Haiti

West Acres Baptist Church scored a small victory as aid workers struggle to get help where it’s needed in Haiti.

Today, a medical mission team from the Evans church is making its way to the earthquake-stricken country, carrying trunks full of medical supplies.

Their airline, Delta, originally said it would cost $3,200 to transport the supplies, in addition to the cost of the tickets purchased by the 14-member team.

The team reached out to media, and when they arrived this morning at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta had waived they fee, said Pam Hutton, secretary to senior pastor the Rev. Larry Harmon.

“I got an e-mail early this morning. They’re on their way,” she said.

The team packed at West Acres Tuesday night, taking off for Atlanta at 4:30 a.m. this morning. They’ll land in the Dominican Republic this afternoon, where they’ll make their way to Haiti to work in an orphanage devastated by the quake. The team returns to Augusta Jan. 27.

Even though the doctors and nurses of the team didn’t have to pay the fee, they would have if it meant they could have brought more equipment, Hutton said.

Team members had to leave supplies behind after they were notified by Delta of a two-bag limit, which kept them from paying more in fees for a third or fourth bag even if they wanted to.

The supplies include donations from the community: vital medical equipment and food for children and baby formula.

“We were prepared to pay,” Hutton said. “It got out in the media and Delta backed off. It’s a little bit of a miracle.”

I always fly Delta and have

I always fly Delta and have never had anything but good luck with them. I got food poisoning from T-bones the night before I was to fly out to Colorado. I recheduled the flight for the next day, but the agent accidently changed my ticket to a one way flight. When it was time to come back (2 days before Christmas) The lady at the Denver airport couldn't find my ticket. Neither of us knew the problem at the time, but she figured out what happened, gave me a free 1st class ticket home in time for Christmas. T-bones wouldn't even call me after writing them a letter concerning their food preparation. Never again. My brother & his wife are members at West Acres and that church really cares. They do alot for those in need. God Bless them and Delta for helping them out.

West Acres, where I have a

West Acres, where I have a number of friends, is doing church as church should be done in following's Jesus' admonition to take care of those with problems. God bless them and keep them safe and multiply their efforts there and bring them safely home. Delta is catching flack down in Savannah for having the highest priced roundtrip tickets to Atlanta so maybe they are getting the word that they are overdoing it just a bit. They can probably write this off as a charitable donation but who care about that? The fact is that the people got the fee waived . Praise the Lord for miracle.
