Of that, Georgians gave 3 percent or about $225,000. South Carolinians have delivered 1 percent of the national total, or about $85,000.
The donation statistics are according to mGive, the organization that supplies the mobile technology employed by the Red Cross.
The donations have increased since Friday, when mGive first compiled a map ranking donations by state. By Saturday night, cell phone users in Georgia pledged more than $501,701 to the Red Cross by text message, according to a statement from Verizon Wireless on Monday.
By Monday morning, mobile donations to the Red Cross totalled $17 million nationwide.
While donations pour in to the national organization, the Augusta Chapter of The American Red Cross has also seen an uptick, but is reluctant to release an amount, said Sarah Townsend, director of public relations and development.
Weve seen gracious donations from Augusta and the CSRA, Ms. Townsend said of the chapter, which includes 11 counties. The donations have been coming in, but theres still a big need to meet. Were still asking people to dig deep.
