Basketball league for white Americans targets Augusta

A new professional basketball league boasting rosters made up exclusively of white Americans has its eyes set on Augusta, but the team isn’t receiving a warm welcome.

The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

“Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league,” the statement said.

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver, who has publicly expressed his support for minor league teams in the past, said he would not do the same for this team.

“As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta,” he said. “However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city.”

Don “Moose” Lewis, the commissioner of the AABA, said the reasoning behind the league’s roster restrictions is not racism.

“There’s nothing hatred about what we’re doing,” he said. “I don’t hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.”

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of “street-ball” played by “people of color.” He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas’ indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans’ dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.

“Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?” he said. “That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.”

The Atlanta-based league, which will operate as a single-entity owning all of its teams, is looking for local contacts to pay $10,000 to become a “licensee” in one of 12 cities throughout the Southeast. Lewis said he has already received threats from people opposed to the roster restrictions and several cities have told him to stay out of town. Lewis said he has yet to hear from any one in Augusta.

“We need a local person ingrained into the community to make this successful,” he said.

Lewis said he expects to eventually find support in every town with a team.

“People will come out and support a product they can identify with. I’m the spoken minority right now, but if people will give us a chance, it’ll work... The white game of basketball, which is essentially a fundamental game, works.”

Lewis said he wasn’t sure where the team will play.

Augusta has had problems with minor league basketball teams in the past, but the issues never centered around race. The Augusta Drive lasted less than a month before folding in 1995, citing financial reasons. The Augusta Groove made it through a full, 20-game schedule in 2009, but accusations from players and local businesses that the team wasn’t paying its bills surrounded the team during the second half of the season. The team later shut down in the offseason.

They can play games out where they have mud pit runs for trucks. What gym do they think would let them use it? I predict this news article will break all records for comments. I'm getting in early.

This would be a neat idea if

This would be a neat idea if they did not restrict it to whites only. By that, I mean, a return to basketball the way it was meant to be played, before dunking seemed to be the only way to score, and players actually played as a team.

Way to go! It's about time.

Way to go! It's about time. Now how about Miss White America, Miss White USA, Strictly Caucasion College Fund. White only everything that there is a Black only thing for. Thank you for having the fortitude. I wish you the best of luck with your White Basketball team. Augusta and people across the country, get behid this; you know you've thought about this before - the white only thing - if you would now support the concept, we may stand a chance in our country in the future.

Not that I would join this group, but people are free to do what they want. Just like the Nubian Motorcycle Club I saw in the "Spotted" section.

Kinda weird, I don't see it

Kinda weird, I don't see it catching on, but I'm more of a football fan so I'm biased. And it's kind of funny to see all the comments. People don't seem to mind minority set aside government construction projects & contracts but if some private group tries to start an all white team, listen to the howls. There seems to be a double standard here.

Minorities are allowed to all

Minorities are allowed to all kinds of their race only events all in the name of heritage. Why is it racist for a person to be proud of European or "White" heritage?

This is hilarious! Andywarhol and Chillen, I agree with you, though. Ohh Ispy, RCR, Justus, Fruity, why do I feel a "Oh the hate", "Great Country eh?", or a "white hoods" comment coming from 1 or more of you?

The division has already been

The division has already been created and that division has widened with the years. There is BLACK Entertainment Television, there is the BLACK Congressional caucus, there is BLACK Miss America and BLACK Miss Everything else, there is the United NEGRO College Fund, there is the National Association for the Advancement of COLORED People and on and on and on. So where is the opposition to THESE divisive groups? Blacks will NEVER let racism die in this country so why should a basketball team be an all WHITE team? Is there anything wrong with one race working together in harmony for their own enjoyment? Apparently not if all black organizations mentioned above are OK. We've even seen a black senator who had serious questions about his eligibility accepted into the congress because he was taking Barak Hussein Obama's seat. So tell me, if this proposed team doesn't have racism as one of its expressed reasons to exist what is the problem here? "Equality" only works ONE way? Today is a day to celebrate the life of a man who never served as the president nor any other public office but he did have a dream. His words didn't address creating a black only society in any form.

By the way that statement

By the way that statement about natural born United States citizens applies to the office of the presidency - we're still waiting on that proof one year after he took office.

I can hear the announcers

I can hear the announcers now. "He is such a smart player. He is unselfish. Maybe he doesn't have all the athletic ability in the world, but he makes it up with hard work. He is a pure shooter from beyond the 3 point line. He can shoot free throws with the best of them." Haha

This must be from The Onion

This must be from The Onion News! Seriously!?! Perhaps this is an opportunity for an elected leader (preferrably non-African American) to speak out against this - saying emphatically that this kind of business is not the kind of business we want for citizens in our community. I say non-African American for a couple of reasons: first, some expect African Americans to be the only one's concerned with issues of race; and, second, it's about time that non-African American leaders in Augusta demonstrated racial and cultural awareness when it is not necessarily politically expedient. I think a statement by the mayor, chamber of commerce, or commishes would go a long way and help reset relations after recent racial debacles (i.e, in-house attorney issue; animal control director issues; downtown racial epithets issue; et cetera)

People promoting this know there is no chance of it actually coming to fruition. The whole announcement is a publicity stunt to draw attention to minority only events. They don't even have a functioning web site.

its not even aprils fools day

its not even aprils fools day yet... get real this is the biggest joke as well as the comments, the reason why there's a miss black everything and united negro college fund is because its hard as hell to achieve this feat. when there's only 6percent black's who are even looked at to qualify miss usa. these associations/groups are made to close in those gaps which i have no problem with and black entertainment t.v. is owned by a white owner as well waterdown from what bet used to be, all the real good shows uncut/basement/rapcity/cita's world was canceled, so that does not count, as for sports hey what basketball courts do u see white people at??? i dont really see any except for the goals outside someones house so of course that will be black dominated, football still mixed, nascar/hockey/and soccer will always be white dominated untill u get some serious dedicated black players which in due time will happen. But real talk if they want this all white team thats fine but dont expect any high expectations, i bet this league are all in the south, bet they wont try advertising this in the north lol... oh yeah im white and i dont take this mess serious for anything otherwise than a joke

Wow! I think this is both

Wow! I think this is both hilarious and appropriate! These people have an absolute right to do this and I wish them luck. Like other people on here have mentioned, there are so many organizations and events that black people have specified to be their own, that I think that since these have all been accepted in our society, then any other ethnicity has the same right to do so. I challenge anyone to give us readers intelligent reasons why this should not be allowed, in light of the black-exclusive organizations and events that are allowed. And don't give me the reason that "it just is not right on so many levels"! Well, that didn't stop the black people, did it? In fact, white people need not respond here...just the black people. I really am interested. In fact, I may even change my opinion if you give good and intelligent reasons.

trillaboycloud - you gave NO

trillaboycloud - you gave NO reasons for the black only organizations to exist without any negativity. Personally I see no problem but I DO see a problem with those who don't want the same thing for an organization that chooses to be WHITE only. If they make it, fine, if they don't fine, but they should have the same opportunity as any black group. As for your 6%, blacks are approximately 13% of the makeup of our country now with a larger margin in the south, the very place where slavery was centered centuries ago and the very place where blacks can find more acceptance than in other parts of our country. It should NEVER be about the skin color anyway but if a white basketball team wants to form and see if they can make it, what's all the squabble? It doesn't matter the race of the OWNER of BET, it is still BLACK Television Entertainment tv. What's good for the goose should be good for the gander otherwise Martin Luther King's dream of EQUALITY will never come to pass. The pendulum has swung way farther the other way than stopping in the middle as his dream suggested. By the way all those "best" tv shows that you mentioned must not have had good ratings, you think?

I'm a bit disappointed in the

I'm a bit disappointed in the mayor's wavering - but politicians must do that I suppose. He's in favor of a minority team but he's NOT in favor of THIS team. Now that is racism at its height. Let the public decide if it makes it or not - if the team can gather the money to rent an arena will the city say NO? THAT would create another whole set of problems that might make Augusta reconsider hiring that attorney who is walking away from her job with quite a bit of loot..
