Exposure to cold blamed in death of S.C. man found in tent

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Authorities say an autopsy on a South Carolina homeless man found dead in a tent confirms he died from exposure to the cold weather.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler says 55-year-old Kenneth William Hammett died Sunday in the tent he pitched in woods in Gaffney near an exit on Interstate 85.

Fowler says Hammett had other medical conditions that made staying in the cold weather more dangerous.

Hammett was last seen by a convenience store employee the day before he died and was found by another employee on Wednesday after he hadn't been seen for several days.

Lows in the area were in the mid to upper teens the night Hammett died.
