Exposure to cold blamed in death of S.C. man found in tent

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Authorities say an autopsy on a South Carolina homeless man found dead in a tent confirms he died from exposure to the cold weather.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler says 55-year-old Kenneth William Hammett died Sunday in the tent he pitched in woods in Gaffney near an exit on Interstate 85.

Fowler says Hammett had other medical conditions that made staying in the cold weather more dangerous.

Hammett was last seen by a convenience store employee the day before he died and was found by another employee on Wednesday after he hadn't been seen for several days.

Lows in the area were in the mid to upper teens the night Hammett died.

There's no reason for anyone

There's no reason for anyone to be homeless, unless they choose to live that way. Sad story, but don't blame people who work for a living for all of life's sad stories.

I always wonder where the family members of the homeless people are. Did they do something so wrong to them, that they would let them live that way?

It is a great country,

It is a great country, Justus! Thanks for asking! It's a great country where you can choose to live on the streets if you want......I worked in outreach and there are folks out there that would rather be homeless than have to answer to and conform to agency policies that help them.......It's not a nice life, not one I would choose....but we can't live for everyone or make people abide by a standard set of rules.

Reality, living with people

Reality, living with people with uncontrolled drug or alcohol problems, or mental illness, or criminals, is very difficult. Don't judge the families. And some people don't want contact with their family.

Justnuts, it is a great country. If you really do not think so you can exercise one of your rights by leaving. How many of these homeless people do you have in your home since you are always so quick to point this out?
