Vandals broke 158 windows at Copeland Elementary School on Christmas Eve.

Investigator Shawn Newsome said the youngsters, 13 and 9, were charged at their homes Tuesday after causing about $16,000 worth of damage to the Jackson Road school.

The 13-year-old was charged with criminal damage to property in the second degree, a felony. The 9-year-old was charged as an unruly child due to his age.

Investigator Newsome said both were turned back over to their parents per the orders of juvenile authorities.

Now, make their parents pay

Now, make their parents pay for the damage these brats caused. If they're getting taxpayer money and housing, cut it off until what they would have received matches what it cost us taxpayers to fix the mess their spawn made. We don't need to understand their situation or why they felt the need to do such damage; we need some justice and reparation for a change.

At the very least the parents

At the very least the parents need to be held financially liable for the 9 year old since he won't really be punished at all. Unruly child...

MOM AND DAD: BTA's....then

MOM AND DAD:

BTA's....then call DFACS and have them on the other end of the phone while you BTA's AGAIN...

When they come to pick up the children for abuse...you can give them the bill for $16,000.00 from RCBOE and tell them they can pay it since they won't let you be a PARENT of your OWN CHILDREN!!
Same GD problem all over America...

Unpublished

Wow, ok, let's stop being radical and mean and take a look at this realistically. They are NEVER going to recoup the money from these families as they do not have it. Making the parent's pay will not teach the children anything. So, make them report to a parole officer on a regular basis, and then make them WORK two hours EVERY day at the school, pulling weeds, picking up trash, painting the outbuildings, raking leaves, mopping floors....whatever. Until the 13 year old graduates, (if he doesn't graduate, he goes to jail) and the 9 year old is old enough to get a paying job.

I agree with all of you. We

I agree with all of you. We have to pay for the damages as well as pay for their daily living arrangements(incarceration). Stop giving them a slap on the wrist make them work off their debt.

Belle...it is not Radical.

Belle...it is not Radical. It is about parenting, disciplining and teaching your kids right from wrong. It is called wearing their [filtered word]ES OUT and letting them know that you will not be represented as a parent like that! I'd get $16,000.00 out of an [filtered word] Whooping for sure...but then again, my children would also have more sense than to even think of doing something like that! As for your plan of punishment...very wishful thinking...but not realistic. Probation would be fitting...but it is also a JOKE with minors. I know about 3 dozen kids on probation...and it is an absolute JOKE! Zero accountability, zero punishment, zero discipline...YDC is packed...these kids are just buying time to become adults, screw up and then it is off to 3 Hot and a Cot...all compliments of my Dollar b/c Mom and Dad didn't beat that [filtered word] when they screwed up the 1st time!

belle they may not recoup the

belle they may not recoup the money but a message must be sent, if they can't pay then they can do community service cleaning bathrms, serving lunches claening buses or any work around the schools. it is asinine to turn them over to the same trifling, soryy, good-for-nothing individuals who supposed to be parents in the FIRST PLACE, if they are receivning public assistance then they immediately become ineligible until the tab is paid. something has to be done, they can't be allowed to walk away with a slap on the wrist!!!

Belle, that was my thoughts

Belle, that was my thoughts while reading it. Having them on"probation" will show them that they cannot destroy others property without consequence. I want to say kick them out of public housing but then I remember that I was the genius that bought a house in Forest Estates - about a quarter mile from Copeland. Without a home they will rob neighborhoods they are familiar with, shoplift and mug for things to pawn. We arent really solving the problem.

LifelongResident: You make

LifelongResident: You make alot of claims in every post. So these "soryy, good-for-nothing individuals who supposed to be parents" should be evicted from their homes and what pray tell me will become of the children then? You think I'm not upset that my child wore long johns under her clothes and her coat all day in class because of stupidity? Let them work it off at the school until the end of the year and maybe even summer school.

onethick, so what do you

onethick, so what do you suggest give them a slap on the wrist???? these children cost the residents of this county 16000 in damage to the school, not including the additional costs to because the building is not energy efficient. let me guess they should be giving a very hard finger wagging and a make them "promise not to do it again" how about removing the children??? hey thats a thought??? it's the parent responsibility to worry about the children..thick you need to reread my post, i didn't say they should be evicted, i said if they are receiving public assistance then it should be stopped until the bill is paid..that doesn't mean they will be evicted, if they no longer receive public assistance then that means it's time to get a job and pay your own way!!!!

I like Belle's idea a lot,

I like Belle's idea a lot, especially if a parent has to do the same work right along side the child. If parents know they are going to be held accountable for the rotten, antisocial behavior of their children, and be force to suffer real consequences right along with the brat, parental control will experience a ig revival. If a parent has an unmanageable child, they can make it known and try to get help before the kid does something like this. that would be a good way to avoid pulling weeds or mopping floors at a school.

A 9 year old boy is clueless

A 9 year old boy is clueless and can be talked into anything by a 13 year old. My question is, why did the 9 year old's parents allow him to run around with a 13 year old? And by definition, people on public assistance don't have $16,000. If they did, they wouldn't be on public assistance.

Were these the same two

Were these the same two people who were seen walking though the parking lot carrying metal poles and questioned by sheriff's deputies right after it happened? If so, why wasn't that in this report and why did it take 2 weeks for RCSO to 'solve' this crime?

There isn't any welfare

There isn't any welfare housing near Copeland. Stop blaming everything on section 8. Middle class kids get into trouble also.

I think they should make the

I think they should make the parents (Who obviously were not aware of where the kids were as they were not being monitored) AND the kids do some community service. Heck, has anybody seen the amount of trash on the roads? I'm sure the school halls and bathrooms could use a good painting and the floors need some mopping, too. Or how about some police car washing? Until we hold parents AND THEIR KIDS accountable, nothing will change. I'll bet if they were mine, their Butts would be whooped mercilessly and I'd be right there with them saying, "Paint higher, kid! Scrub those floors--here's a rag--you don't get a mop!" and if it ain't done right, DO IT AGAIN.

if they give these 2 brats a

if they give these 2 brats a good tail beating and put them in boot camp where they need to be, maybe the next time they will think about what they do before they go and destroy property that will never be theres. 9 years old yes, you are young, but you are still old enough to know right from wrong. wheres your mommy and your daddy when all this is going on? is there even a babys daddy out there? starting off commiting crimes at earlier and earlier ages. its a darn shame.whats next for these 2 little brats bank robbers, or perhaps murder suspects? oh wait maybe they can turn their life around and be the next president of the united states..haha

Do that and still make them

Do that and still make them pay. The amount is not important as long as it hurts them all a little bit. It's time people realize that they are responsible for their actions and the actions of their children. The children have a whole lifetime to pay this debt. Make them pay it.

These boys and their parents

These boys and their parents need to stand on the dadburn corner every weekend for a year with signs about what they did. They need to be embarassed and shamed. Both families need to pay for the windows even if it's a minimal amount. I don't care if they have make a payment for the next 20 years. Then when the boys turn 18, they have to pay on their own or face prosecution. Enough of taxpayers footing the bill for brats! The parents should be placed on probation too. Aren't y'all fed up with this destroying property crap!???
