Warren Co. schools to lose accreditation

The Warren County School System has received notice it will lose its accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement.

School Superintendent Carol Jean Carey was unavailable for an interview, but confirmed the news via telephone.

Jennifer Oliver, SACS vice president of communications, said a four-member team visited Warren County in June, 2009 to investigate complaints of the governance and leadership of the Warren County Board of Education.

Prior to their arrival in Warrenton, the team had requested and viewed copies of minutes and videos of the school board meetings.

The school system was put on probation as a result of that investigation, and given nine recommendations "to resolve and make significant progress on" by November, when another team would return for a follow-up visit.

"The team that visited them in November felt that they had not made significant progress, and in some cases, they made no progress," Ms. Oliver said. "So the team felt the school system should not retain their accreditation."

The date of the dropped accreditation is delayed until July 30, 2010, Ms. Oliver said, so that students set to graduate at the end of this school year will not be affected.

Ms. Oliver said accreditation is voluntary among schools and systems.

"What I can tell you is there are many, many great schools around the country that are non-accredited simply because they haven’t chosen to go through the process," she said. "In the state of Georgia, it’s slightly different because the Hope Scholarship is tied to students graduating form an accredited school. So, there’s more of an emphasis in Georgia for schools to be accredited."

Ms. Oliver said she doesn’t have a scientific break-down of numbers, but some colleges and universities require students to come from an accredited school, some use it as a criteria but not a requirement, and others don’t even have it listed in their application process at all.

"So, students just really need to assess where they want to attend college, because every one of them is different."

The accreditation is being removed from Warren County, not because of academic standards, but because the school board members failed to follow policies of the district, refused to sign the district’s ethics pledge, disregarded the requirement to use Roberts Rules of Order, failed to follow the district’s charter and micromanaged the school system.

I love the "racism" charges

I love the "racism" charges when the School Board is majority black. You can't make this stuff up. And WCHS student, you are young. You don't know what you don't know. No, the teachers did not get fired because of the color of their skin. If that was the case, why aren't they suing the district? Why didn't all black teachers get fired? It's because they were terrible teachers. You aren't going to realize that until you go to college and find out how much you didn't get taught.

No, this is not a

No, this is not a dictatorship. She is not in charge. Allow me to use something I have learned, from a teacher who is no longer here! You see in America, we are a democracy. There are two types of Democracy: Direct (every citizen votes on every issue personally) and Representative (every one votes for the person that they would like to represent them). America is a representative democracy. We elect members to represent us. As a People of Warren County, We have elected Randy Morris, Gwendolyn Tucker, Clara Roberts, Cecil Brown, and Dr. Charles Culver. All citizens of Warren County. They act as the "Congress" and Ms. Carey as the "President". The "President" proposes ideas and the "Congress" in turn vote on it. Since she is of the mindset of "Speeding", she thinks its what Carey says goes. But have we forgotten about the system of checks and balances that says she can not make a decision unless there is a majority along with her. There has not been so therefore she gets offended and as "Speeding" says, she WHINES about her contract being gone against. I dont know when opinions became irrelevant but that is how she feels. So that is the nature of Democracy and what Carole Jean missed

Corgimom: you need to seriously shut your mouth! For one, look up the term "racism" in any dictionary, or maybe you don't even own one--thats OK..go borrow one from an educated person! P.S. Some of those teachers DID sue for racism. I know one of them personally...was/is my friend!

To Corgimom: I know of a couple of those "terrible" teachers you talk about, who got fired and they were some of the best teachers I have ever seen teach....in all my years of teaching! I personally sat in their rooms observing them, in order to improve on MY teaching. ( MY personal desire in order to improve myself). I was given their names/they were chosen BY the principal--for being some of the very best in the County! THEY were 2 of the ones who got fired.

The problem is that the

The problem is that the Superintendent doesn't know what her job is because she used the previous board like puppets to reach her agendas. Secondly the board is also at fault because the also allow their positions to the fullest potential to end the problems. And this is very disturbing because this board has more educational experience than any other. I am a graduate of the school system, and know the superintendent and board. I find them pleasant and in no way racism outside of said situations. It is and has always been about power.

They need a fresh start.

They need a fresh start. Everyone on that board should hand in their resignation, including Carey. Start over and hire a new Superintendent, and then try to make sure the new board members are a good mixture/representative of several different races...as much as possible. I know Carey did/does think she is above reproach ( I have heard some stories about her work in other Counties too.) Of course stories can change as they "travel"--but some was probably true. I don't think she sees others as her equals-she thinks she should have final say on everything. THAT was the same attitude that the PREVIOUS superintendent of RCBE also had, and look where it got him!

@Augusta Citizen, I haven't

@Augusta Citizen, I haven't been keeping up with Obama, but if your allegations are true and they continue to occur, what do you think is going to happen to him.
@Speeding: so counter-productive. Ignorance at its best.
@Brin: We have several teachers who are working on their Doctorate, our High School Administration consists of DR. Ja'net Bishop, Principal and DR. Shontier Barnes, Assistant Principal! So please come with the correct facts. Jesse Dawson, Rashondrius Burnett, Denise Pennywell, working on dissertations. DR. Landrum in the Middle school. DR. Culver on the BOE.

How many Docs have come up missing since Carole Jean showed up:
-Gregory Rhodes, all but dissertation
-DR. Leslie
-DR. Williams
-DR. Plummer
-DR. Lancaster
-Dr. Watkins
-DR. Pinckney
and the list goes on and on.

I care deeply about what

I care deeply about what alycias thinks of me. But if these tenured teachers got fired without cause, why didn't they sue? Results don't lie. And alycias, if you're so intelligent, you would know that I was commenting on what others had said. I am laughing here. And I dearly love a high schooler instructing me about civics. "We elect members to represent us." Wow, that was enlightening, who would've thought? And, WCHS student, the Federal Government is not run the same way as a school district, and you need more civics to learn that. Perhaps you don't know as much as you think you know.

"And Corgimom, if you're so intelligent, you would know that I was commenting on what Speeding had said. I am laughing here." But the only thing I asked you is who is your child? Do they even go to a Warren County Middle/High? And Democracy is democracy. You can't get mad if I don't agree with you. Robert's Rule of Order:

Carey talk about something
CB make a motion
Someone 2nd if.
The whole Board votes, with the Chairman, only in the event of a tie.
If they go with what Carey says, all well and good. If not, oh well.

Okay, Citizen of Augusta, who has nothing to do what so ever with Warren County High School......

You say that Barack thinks this is a Dictatorship.
If he continues to act as such, he'll eventually get IMPEACHED. That is what I was saying...Need I break it down any further?

@ student. Excuse me why

@ student. Excuse me why aren't they hiring people with doctorates. It's very good to see that your principals have decided to get Ph.D's but from where. Because they sure didnt have them when hired. Secondly two of the people you have listed did not have a doctorate while in the system. And the ones who are getting them now are doing it so that they can jump ship. Thirdly whay doesn't your superintendent have one and make an unheard of amount for an administator without it. Im definately correct.

How could I personally, know

How could I personally, know WHY these tenured teachers got fired. I only know they did. I was there when all this started happening, ( when Carey was first hired)- but stayed in touch with some of the teachers on a regular basis. I can only speculate as to why they were fired. No, I am not super intelligent, but I do have reference books in my home. And I do have 10 yrs. of college, and 2 degrees. Many teachers have done more. I have just a BA. Most of the others I worked with had Masters degrees, and 2 of them I know and worked with then got doctorates soon after they left there. I just couldn't make up my mind what I wanted to major in at first--so ended up with a lot of years of school. Anyway- I would not be saying most of the teachers there don't have higher degrees. Like I also said, some DID sue....though you may not have known or heard about it. Those things are sometimes kept quiet.

Well, alycias, if you worked

Well, alycias, if you worked at the school, then you would know that a tenured teacher can only be fired for very serious causes. And no, they are not kept quiet, lawsuits are public records, and when a teacher sues a school district, it is considered newsworthy and in the public interest, and is highly publicized. WCHS, please educate yourself about how a school district is run before you publicly embarrass yourself any further.

@alycias. Not higher,

@alycias. Not higher, highest. And I wasn't talking about teachers yet admins. Secondly you were probably a very good teacher and I may have been in your class. I was old enough to remember before and after the change. So many people were hurt because of what they believed in. I don't bash WCHS teachers because the taught me alot. And I happily report that most of the ones unfairly treated have went to other systems and are happy

@speeding whiners only whine because something is wrong its elected officials and the hired helps business to make sure the we have nothing to whine about.

Anyone in Warren Co. with an

Anyone in Warren Co. with an ounce of sense knows that Carol Jean Carey has done more to raise the standard of education in Warren Co. than all superintendents we have had put together. We also know the teachers she let go were let go for good legitimate reasons. (As easy as it is to sue this day and time they would have sued) The only mistate she made and it has come back to haunt her, is that she did not report one of her board members to the state dept. when he was a teacher in Warren Co. She allowed him to take the easy way out. He resigned.

@yellow cat everything thats was and has been done has been at a price. I guess when she hired the known student predator that was in best interest. But I digress were you in school while she was in office better yet do your children go to that school or are they bused out like many of her supporters.

@corgimon Ill help alycias out while firing is very sticky. Not renewing yearly contracts is easy, you just don't. Now check that in public record.

@Brin: I took what you were

@Brin: I took what you were saying incorrectly. I agree with you but I get defensive when it comes to my teachers because they are the only ones that try to stay out of the politics of our education. I thought you were trying to imply that they are unfit to teach us.

As a matter of interest to

As a matter of interest to those who are not teachers or who may not be closely associated with a teacher, it is SAID that a tenured teacher can ONLY be fired or asked to resign for "very serious reasons". Yes, thats what they are told. But the facts are they CAN be fired or asked to resign for many other reasons. Ask any teacher. Usually when they get their doctorate ( and I have seen this happen 3-4 times), they are asked to resign. Why? Cause the district has to pay them more! Dah!!! The system can easily hire another teacher who is still qualified for that position, and does not have to pay them as much! And I worked in enough different Counties to say that I saw this was the rule of thumb among the superiors in the Counties--thats just what they did. Also, lawsuits are NOT always "highly publicized" as you say Corgimom. We only hear of SOME of them in the papers. ( the worst ones with the most controversial subjects ). "Tenure" does not hold the weight that it once did. Yes, lawsuits are made public, but do you know anyone who goes to the courthouse to read them?? I don't.

I think it may also hold true for those on the board also, ??? ( getting a doctorate) ...Cause its not required that they have a doctorate, so maybe if they get one they would be asked to move on too. Does anyone know out there?

Yes, that's another "trick"

Yes, that's another "trick" or ploy these administrators do..they just do not renew the teachers contract. But thats a rotten thing to do to an educator! It makes it extremely difficult if not impossible for them to get another position. (Cause the applications and at the interviews the teacher is always asked why they are not returning to the previous school district or why their contract was not renewed.
