The Augusta Commission has voted 7-3 to accept the resignation of General Counsel Chiquita Johnson, and to appoint Staff Attorney Andrew McKenzie as interim general counsel.

Matt Aitken, Bill Lockett and Jimmy Smith dissented.

According to the severance agreement she signed Monday, Ms. Johnson will be paid for nine more months - three more months than she's entitled to by contract if terminated - and keep her benefits for nine months. The city will pay $1,187.14 to her landlord to break her lease early.

Ms. Johnson also agreed not to file litigation against the city seeking financial compensation, and she can't apply for another job with the city.

Mr. Aitken said he voted no because he was unfamiliar with the issue. Mr. Lockett said he was opposed because the deal was worked out behind the scenes, with him "left out of the loop." Mr. Smith said he didn't like the terms of the severance package, questioning why she should be compensated beyond six months.

"I don't understand that," Mr. Smith said, "when all the evidence is clear that we have."

Though he voted yes, Mr. Grantham said afterward that he did not want to cast a vote in favor of the severence package. City Clerk Lena Bonner said she's checking into procedural rules to see if the vote should be recorded as 6-4.

Chiquita caused so much

Chiquita caused so much damage with her poor legal decisions. The people of Augusta will suffer for a long time. And, it think that some people stil support her---how ridiculous.

Chiquita is a discrace to the legal community.

Thank God that is like Tiger Woods and denies being Black. In face, Chiquita does not claim to be a minority.

Hatney just assumed that she was a minority---she has never stated that she was Black or said anything other than bragging that she had White People in her family.

Whatever her racial make-up, she is an idiot for sure.

It is worth the pay-out to get her out of Richmond County Government Business once and for all.

Black, White, Latinor or whatever---the people of Richmond County deserve better than the likes of Chiquita.

Chiquita---you mean, cold-hearted, incompetent worm of a human-being.

GET OUT OF RICHMOND COUNTY---ASAP!!!

Chiquita caused so much damage with her poor legal decisions. The people of Augusta will suffer for a long time. And, to think that some people still support her---how ridiculous. Chiquita is a discrace to the legal community. Thank God that she is like Tiger Woods and denies being Black. In fact, Chiquita does not claim to be a minority. Commissioners Hatney and Betty Beard just assumed that she was a minority---she has never stated that she was Black or said anything other than bragging that she had White People in her family. RCR, what makes you think

RCR, what makes you think less than one year's salary is a lot of money. Would you have made the same comment on your 3:25 post if she were white?? I think not. We all know how you operate!!!!

Butch had a lot of great

Butch had a lot of great ideas besides the CNPO..but didn't have the big money backing from the kingmakers like The Boardmans. He sure has heck had more guts and I believe if he was the commissioner he would have taken a much stronger stand. But oh well, the voters wanted another milque toast mascot in the mold of Deke.. and so that's what it appears what they got.

RCR, you seemed to know who

RCR, you seemed to know who is banned and who isn't, so I tell you this. If I find out that you are getting personal information from someone at the AC, you and the AC WILL be introduced to the new city attorney and I'll have fun spending you and your snitch's money that the courts make you pay.

Kulay... RCR likes to pull

Kulay... RCR likes to pull this same stunt on another online forum... why this individual is allowed to continually post here when they routinely harrass and threaten others is beyond me. I just hit the report comment button when I see one of RCR's harrassing posts.

Emerydan, kukay, who are to decide who post here. I don't care what you think of my post, because I usually don't bother reading yours.I didn't post to get either of your views. You are the ones harassing me. I never spoke or mentioned either of you. You are just intolerant of other views. That's just tough.

Now that the gridlock is

Now that the gridlock is broken, can we assume employees of this caliber will no longer be put on the payroll?

Let me get this straight,

Let me get this straight, now. Banana Bandito plays fast and loose with our money, is less than truthful on her application,
is accused of incompetence and is resigning (A fancy term for quiting.). Then, she gets rewarded for her actions. Besides being a leech, she is alsa a thief. Gee, I wonder how much she would have gotten if she was just fired?!? Evidently, seven commissioners checked their brains at the door of the meeting room!

And deke's position on this

And deke's position on this issue is????? Oh that's right... like on every other hot button issue in this city.. he doesn't need to take one..and he doesn't. he just sits there like a bump on a log wondering what film he will be an extra in next.

Johnston, in answer to your

Johnston, in answer to your question posted at 6:52, I'd say "likely not". Based on the decision made today from the new commission, we now have an ex-employee who was granted a resignation package that was far greater than her contract entitled her to. I suspect backroom deal-making was going on with some of the commissioners... all at the expense of taxpayers. Gotta love it!

For once, I agree with Emery.

For once, I agree with Emery. If there's anything even closely resembling controversy, not a peep out of the mayor. If there's a police shooting, he's hiding. He ducks any opportunity to stand up and be a leader, and today is another example. Lead us somewhere - any where - or let someone else do it.

anotherperspective.. but it

anotherperspective.. but it seems like the majority of Augustans just think he is doing a peachy job...I simply do not get it. Deke looks good in the part of mayor but he plays the job lousily, but I suppose most ppl here would rather have style over substance. The mayor is the only official elected city-wide.. we need a mayor who is the concsience of the city and speaks up for the city and all of us.. we do not have that in Deke

I hope the next employer has

I hope the next employer has enough sense to "google" her name and find all about her spending problems. Two employer do not want her to darken their doors with her presence again. She may not be so lucky with the third. Wow, what a reputation! Now I can really see that some attorneys have no integrity at all! What does the Georgia Bar think about someone like her???? I'd like to know!!?? So, this is her M.O. and how she makes money without really working. What a shameful claim to fame. Who's got the coffemakers and the dang silk plants? Why are we paying her rent??? Ridiculous!

There are many very, very

There are many very, very talented and brilliant black attorneys out there. If the county government wishes to hire "a minority" then no one mediocre should ever have to be hired. There is absolutely no need for that! Remember commissioners, if you hire a person to satify a friend of yours, they had better be someone qualified to work for the citizens and have a strong and honest work ethic!

I think Deke is spineless

I think Deke is spineless because he doesn't want to make waves. I suspect he is looking for higher office at some point so he avoids controversy.

Think about it JohnQ... only

Think about it JohnQ... only a less than mediocre attorney who could not get a job with a reptuable firm would work as in house attorney for a mediocre medium size city like Augusta.. This is what you are going to get with an in house attorney. The city would be better off contracting legal services out with a reputable local law firm.

I think anyone can file a bar

I think anyone can file a bar complaint against an attorney. I may be wrong about this, but if I'm not, then it would be wise to just contact the Georgia Bar and suggest a google search on Chiquita T. Johnson. We know the city won't do anything to warn a potential future employers of her poor legal skills, lack of ethics and history of stealing from her employers.

And everyone wonders why

And everyone wonders why people talk bad about Augusta-Richmond County. This has got to be the stupidest thing I have heard of. If the average person done something like this. Would you get away with it, I think not!! Keep your crazy People and Commisioners. I'm sure Columbia County Appreciates it.
