Jennifer Marshall holds her newborn, Avery James Palmer, Friday afternoon at University Hospital. Avery was born at 12:46 a.m. Januray 1.

The 5 pound, 8 ounce baby boy was the first child born in the new decade in the Augusta area. He came in the world earlier than scheduled as his due date was Jan. 22.

Avery was born at University Hospital to Jim Palmer and Jennifer Marshall of North Augusta. He was 19 inches in length. The couple also has an older daughter, Haley Ann, 17.

“I didn’t have a clue,” Ms. Marshall said about the possibility of her son being born on New Year’s Day. “I had no idea until they started telling me to push.”

“That’s when we knew he was coming,” Mr. Palmer added.

But, because she began labor well before midnight, they figured Avery was going to be a “New Year’s Eve baby”, he said.

“That’s what everyone started saying, and that’s what we thought,” he said.

However, he held off making his entrance into this world until 12:46 a.m. Friday.

Haley Ann, gazing at her little brother, said she enjoyed preparing for his arrival, and had the most fun shopping for baby clothes.

“I can’t wait for him to get bigger so I can teach him some things and do different stuff with him, you know, be a big sister,” she said

ICSunshine: What the hey is THAT supposed to mean.."the TYPE born at University Hospital"? Are you putting people down who go to or who are born at that hospital? That what it sounds like. If you are, shame on you! For all we know, maybe you were born in a barn....no wait, THAT was Jesus!

ICSunshine: I would like to

ICSunshine: I would like to know what you mean also. My daughter was born at University too. She has two loving, Christian, married parents who try to instill good values in her everyday. If you had nothing nice to say then you should have just kept your negativity to yourself. Why start the new year off with negativity? You really need to PRAY for yourself.

ok! congrats to the family. i hope your little fellow grows up to be the president. certainly, the university hospital is a fine hospital. their's been, what? a couple of million babies rolled out of there. i think, however, to defend sunshine, maybe, just one trip to the emergency room would make a lasting impression on all of you. think what you want of me, i really don't care. i'll tell you, i'm sick of seeing it overflow with snot-nosed little future thugs and they baby mamas axing where the indigent care line forms.

Maybe one of these "more lucid" posters can explain who gets to choose the last name of the child when the "parents" don't share one without going to Maury for the DNA test.

Please, please get over

Please, please get over yourselves, people. This is a new baby with parents who happen to have different surnames. In my church congregation, I can - just off the top of my head - count 4 couples with different last names, all of whom are married, and all of them have advanced degrees. (For the unenlightened, that means Masters or PhD level.) Oh, and by the way, all of them happen to be Caucasian, not that it matters.

Know the family very well.

Know the family very well. They are fine people! Stop assuming! He is an airline pilot and she is a Health Information professional. Let them enjoy their moment without judgmental comments that mean absolutely nothing!!

I agree with "seenitB4":

I agree with "seenitB4": ICSunshine doesn't sound like she's seen the sun for a long time. (take that the way you want )-Something's buggin' her! She and "smartie" don't sound very "smartie". They need to take their negativity elsewhere! All babies are loved, and were formed by their Creator! I have seen some very low class, mean people who have PhD's, but no common sense or love in their hearts; and some super intelligent and loving people who are high school drop outs!

To "smartie": No, I am not a "narrow minded lunatic". ( and neither are most of the others on here, engaged in this subject)I have 2 degrees, 10 yrs. of education beyond high school, double majored in 2 very difficult majors, and am probably about twice your age. But obviously it must make you feel better about yourself and boost your low self esteem to believe that everyone else is bordering on lunatic.

yeah yeah! i have to agree

yeah yeah! i have to agree alycias, they are formed by their "creator". what's sad, is that, too many times, their "creator" is an unemployed crackhead, with his probation officer breathing down his neck, while the other "creator" already has 5 other deadbeat baby daddies, and a one bedroom section 8 house.

I pray that both of you

I pray that both of you become more tolerant of others situations and what they have been through. You are both assuming that having money/class in life will make everything right and make evryone like you. Thats not always the case. It may make you more comfy in life, but that is not always equated with inner happiness, OR with being law abiding OR with having a decent community. Think about the flower that grows up between the cracks of concrete in the street. And WHO caused it to grow there?
