Local officials spent Christmas Eve repairing windows at Copeland Elementary School on Jackson Road after vandals smashed 158 of them.

Louis Svehla, a spokesman for the Richmond County Board of Education, said crews repaired the windows with materials they had and have ordered replacements for the others.

Firefighters went to the school after receiving an alarm call Thursday night and saw the windows destroyed, according to a Richmond County sheriff’s report.

Two people were seen walking though the parking lot carrying metal poles and they were questioned by sheriff’s deputies. The two subjects denied they broke the windows and claimed they had seen two people with baseball bats break the windows earlier.

According to the report, the two people carrying poles are suspects in the case but have not been charged.

Mr. Svehla said he did not know whether anyone had been charged in the incident, and additional information was not immediately available from the sheriff’s office.

He said it’s not rare for vandals to destroy school property during long weekends or holidays.

“Whenever we have extended breaks we do tend to have more occurrences than when we don’t,” he said. “During the week it doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue.”

Well I sure hope they got

Well I sure hope they got more than just the names of these 2 punks! I mean, they were caught carrying metal poles, all those windows were broken...no, there might not be actual proof yet, but this is close enough to haul their butts in, isn't it?? This is just totally senseless and I am almost speechless. Why did they do this??? Why would anyone do this?

Great alibi! It's perfectly normal to walk through an Elementary School parking lot carrying metal poles on Christmas Eve. I mean, who doesn't do that? Knowing Richmond County, the officer probably said, "Okay, could you give me a description of the two people with the bats you saw earlier? Great, thank you and Merry Christmas."

We must understand and learn

We must understand and learn from these two individuals. What they were doing was only an expression of their victimization by society.

Wow! I found this story with a link that said "breaking" news. Yeah, replacing all these windows will be costly. It's a shame that the people responsible would think needless destruction is something to be proud of.

i feel sorry for these young

i feel sorry for these young vandals. obviously, their alienation from society caused them to act out against a perceived object of their oppression. we should allow them to grow & learn from this experience thru counseling and gov't assistance. only then will these young men begin to value their place in society. merry christmas - capt. sarcasm (bone)

I am thinking about the men

I am thinking about the men who work for the school board who have to be out there on a holiday patching windows instead of being with their children.

No way those upper windows

No way those upper windows could have been broken with a bat. Possibly even the people with the metal poles were after a little work. That could be why they looked so innocent. Ya know?

This in the long run will end

This in the long run will end up costing everyone. THEY should have to pay double the replacement cost! I used to own a business that was damaged by an individual who was arrested and found guilty BUT he did not have to pay for any of the damages to my property or to my business (which was closed after what this individual did because parents would no longer allow their children to come there.)

Think about this also,

Think about this also, besides the high cost of having to replace 158 windows, what about the cost of the possible damaged that occurred after all this torrential rain we had last night? You know, the teachers (and students) are having to do without many things because of the strong budget cuts, now they'll have to face even more because alot of money will HAVE to be paid to replace the windows...no getting around that. As far as the question someone posed about the neighbors not hearing anything, I used to go to Copeland DECADES ago! From what I remember, the school is located on a huge lot and the nearest neighbors are quite a good distance away. Still, someone who happened to be out in one of the nearby apartment parking lots must've heard something. What a shame! These punks should have to pay something...money or preferably TIME to volunteer at the school. No, on second thought, I'm not so sure I'd want my child to be around hooligans like this!

It used to be a good area. It is near the mall. We lived there for more than a decade, but sadly, we had to move.
And the police aren't stupid. They don't always give all the details to the media. There may be more to this than is being reported.

Why should anybody care about

Why should anybody care about this issue, the ones involved don't care about it either. What has been, is and will be will never change. There is nothing you can say to change it. It is a way of life.

I grew up in the neighborhood

I grew up in the neighborhood across the street from Copeland. My mom just moved out about a year ago. Could't sell the house, so she ended up putting it on the Section 8 housing list and my good-for-nothing neice and all her illigitimate children moved in! They are from the "Jerry Springer" side of my family! LOL! Used to be a very family-oriented area. I'm very thankful that my Mom is out of there. Course, after she dies, the rest of us kids are going to have to kick my niece out and sell the house for next to nothing, because none of us want to be Section 8 landlords! I'm sure the neighbors who have lived there for decades are not happy with my mom! But my mom's German, so she doesn't give a crud about what they think! Anyway....hate it that this has happened to Copeland.
