Holiday reprieve reunites confined soldier, infant son

FORT STEWART, Ga. -- An Army soldier arrested for skirting overseas deployment to care for her infant son has been reunited with the boy for the holiday season, according to her attorney.

Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, assigned to the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, had been confined to Hunter Army Airfield since mid-November, when she refused to board a plane bound for Afghanistan because, she said, plans for her 11-month-old child to stay with his grandmother in Oakland, Calif., fell through.

The grandmother ultimately claimed the boy, named Kamani, in Georgia, and Hutchinson was detained on possible desertion charges.

The holiday reprieve has allowed Hutchinson to travel to California, where she "is overjoyed to see her son after being separated from him," Rai Sue Sussman, the San Francisco-based attorney, said in a news release. "It was very difficult to say goodbye to him under the circumstances, and she is enjoying re-bonding with her son and giving her mother a break.

"She also looks forward to finding a resolution of her situation."

Sussman said Hutchinson, a single mother, has a pending request to the Army for discharge for reasons of parenthood.

Efforts to reach Fort Stewart officials were unsuccessful Thursday. Calls to Sussman for additional comments were not returned.

Prime reason why women should

Prime reason why women should not be in the military. It puts a hardship on others. There is no excuse for this.

Women should not be allowed

Women should not be allowed to become pregnant while serving. If they do, they should be court martialed.

DEVGRU, what decade are you

DEVGRU, what decade are you from? It takes two people to make a child. If you are going to punish anyone in this situation, punish the man who is not taking care of his son while his mother is trying to serve her country. It puts hardship on others when men shirk their responsibilities towards their children. There is no excuse for THAT.

How do you know that she

How do you know that she wasn't just trying to get out of going to Afghanistan by using her son as an excuse? Apparently someone stepped up to do it since she has been under arrest. They could have done it while she was deployed.

Rainingoranges, we are

Rainingoranges, we are talking war here. We are talking about female soldiers who can't perform their duties because they become pregnant while in the military. If they already have children prior to joining they must relinquish custody to someone else before they are accepted. That is why a general in charge of the Afghanistan theater is now jailing his soldiers if they become pregnant. He is also jailing the men who are responsible. Once again we are talking war here. We are talking about U.S. soldiers dying because someone must be sent home and no one is sent to replace them. And I will tell you something else from a friend of mine who is a Colonel in the U.S. Army. He appreciates the 30,000 troops that President Obama is sending him. But he wants to know where they are going to come from. This just makes it worse. Learn about your military before you talk about hardships.

One more thing. When one

One more thing. When one joins the military he or she is owned by the military. The rules that apply to civilians no longer apply to soldiers. You don't go home at 5:00 everyday. You screw up and people die. You decide that you don't want to do your job, you go to jail. Why? Because that's what it takes to keep our military the strongest in the world. Women are just as brave, just as intelligent, just as dedicated, but they come with baggage that inhibits military duties. I wouldn't mind fighting next to a woman that can pull her weight, but what happens when she gets pregnant. Who is going to fight next to me then.
