Autopsy determines man's death caused by crash

The Edgefield County Coroner has determined that a pedestrian run over by a car Tuesday died from the impact of the crash.

Lewis McKinney, 51, of Saluda County, was lying in the middle of Ridge Road about 12:20 p.m. , when he was hit by a vehicle driving west on the road, said Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett. An autopsy was conducted in Newberry Wednesday afternoon, and concluded that Mr. McKinney died from the collision. The coroner has ruled his death as accidental.

"He died from the injuries of being hit by the car," Mr. Burnett said Wednesday.

Toxicology tests are being conducted on Mr. McKinney's body, but the results will not be back for several weeks, he said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation, but has not filed charges against the driver, Isaiah Gartrell, said Trooper Scot Edgeworth.
