SC fire station yanks Nativity

  • Follow Latest News

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A fire department has removed a Nativity display from a station after getting a complaint.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Monday that the Nativity scene was removed from Charleston's Fire Station 12 after the complaint that the display supports Christianity.

The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter dated Dec. 17 to Mayor Joe Riley and Fire Chief Thomas Carr asking that the display be removed. The letter says a local resident complained.

The complaint was referred to the city's legal department, which recommended the scene be removed, citing U.S. Supreme Court rulings against promoting one religion over another.

A number of Charleston fire stations have Christmas decorations, but those include Santa Claus and holiday lights.

I am so tired of hearing

I am so tired of hearing stories like this on the news. What these Wisconsin idiots and ohters do not realize is that all the traditional Christmas decorations have Christian ties as well. The evergreens represent the eternal life in Christ. The wreath represents God's eternal nature. The lights represent Christ, the Light of the World coming to earth. The presents are symbolic of the gifts presented to Jesus by the Magi. If you want to rid America of religious symbols at Christmas you have to wipe out everything we decorate with at well.

First off crass capitalism

First off crass capitalism and debilitating materialism turn Advent into "the holiday season" instead of the season of preparation, self-sacrifice and reflection that is intended to help us appreciate what Christmas actually means for mankind. Then the celebration of Christmas itself is cut off at the end of its first full day. So instead of preparing for one of the two greatest events of human history, most of us buy ourselves into debt or feel badly that we can't afford to, and then we glut ourselves senseless in a debauch of consumption that most Americans call "Christmas". And through it all, the shrivelled entities who object to Christianity can't abide anything that alludes to the actual reason there is to celebrate. Our founding fathers would be so proud!

Christians certainly have a

Christians certainly have a right to their beliefs and opinions, however not everyone was born into the Christian faith. However, for those that have been, why can't they enjoy the nativity scene? They that are not Christians should ALSO understand those of different faiths and have respect. But you Christians on here, don't be getting all up and mighty and on your soap box. Everyone is different...we all need to TRY and show some tolerance

When will people realize that

When will people realize that this county was founded on freedom of religion? No one is forcing anyone to worship in one way or another. We are rapidly bleaching our culture. We will soon become a society without any traditions out of fear of offending others. I will say it again, after I retire from the military I'm outta here. I'll live my life in a free country.

ONE local person whined to an

ONE local person whined to an out of state organization and they sent a letter to the Mayor and he didn't just throw it away? The city had them take down their display??? The coward couldn't find the courage to speak up for them self but cried to a Wisconsin group to handle the 'problem' for them? How pathetic that the wishes of the ONE outweigh the wishes of the many.

The person who complained

The person who complained must not want to be know since they didn't have the guts to stand up but had to go to this organization and make a complaint.

I think every municipality should not merely acquiesce but go to court. Break em financially. Don't let a mere form letter and a 44 cent stamp bring home the victory.

DC believes in Kris

DC believes in Kris Kristofferson's version of freedom. "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose." Our current regime is just trying to free us all by making us bereft of individuality, inequality, and social/economic classes. Heil Comrades!

When are we going to stand up

When are we going to stand up and do the right thing? The complainant should have been told "We're sorry that you may have been offended, however, Jesus is the reason for the season. Thank you for your input, and goodbye."

A religion is a set of common

A religion is a set of common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people.

Athiesm is a religion, so having the views of The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation infringing on the beliefs of anyone else is a unbelievable oximoron.

What is worse is that anyone listens to these self-centered, officious jerks. (I know, lawyers love this stuff).

The Bill of Rights states that congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. Nothing in that gives anyone the right to impose their religious views on others.

We have entered truly dark

We have entered truly dark days. Perhaps not unlike that experienced in the Middle Ages. Today's religion is anything "Global" - global warming, global economy, global security force, global . . . welcome to the new world order. Conform or else . . . I guess the question is - Are there enough Americans willing to stand up - perhaps die - for Liberty over Tyranny - the way our forefathers put everything on the line when they defied a king and an empire? At the birth of this nation, the "global world order" was overwhelmingly tyrranical - monarchies and chieftans. The concept of America was individual Liberty, individual Responsibility, the concept that who we are and what we are comes from God, not man. Those who now espouse the global world order religion are a throwback to the old days of tyrannical rule.

USA4Life, the symbols you

USA4Life, the symbols you referred to as "Christian" symbols of Christmas were not originally Christian symbols.. they were explained in such a manner so that the pagans of old could easily be assimilated by the early church.. the pagans used those symbols in their spiritual celebrations for hundreds of years before the church came a long..
