Medical College of Georgia Cancer Center Director Kapil Bhalla has stepped down, a school official said.

Dr. Bhalla resigned as director but will still be at the center running his lab, said School of Medicine Dean D. Douglas Miller. Dr. John Catravas, director of the Vascular Biology Center and senior associate dean of administration in the School of Medicine, will be the acting director, Dr. Miller said.

Dr. Bhalla was named in April 2006 to be the cancer center director while he was scientific director of the Hematologic Malignancy Program at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Fla.

He was heavily involved in the design of a new $31 million Cancer Center, which is slated to open in January. He is a member of a key developmental therapeutics study section for the National Institutes of Health and a well-recognized researcher in new therapies that target genetic components of cancer cells.

“His administrative duties have been reassigned, at his choice,” Dr. Miller said.

Whoa, this is a big deal power shift. I wonder what they were trying to make him do that caused him to quit.

pattym35

I wonder why they're letting him stay

tired of the crap

if i ever found that i have the big c, mcg will be the last place i will go. my sister was going there and they flat out lied to all of us not once .but three times we talked to the head of the cancer center and he lied that she did not have it, that they had got it all with surgery. he is a bald headed liair.

If I ever have cancer, I hope that I am able to go to MCG! They are state of the art. Nothing can compare to the advanced treatment that is available in all medical fields when you're working with a teaching hospital like MCG.

Wonder if this has any relation to his candidacy for MCG Pres, as he took upon himself to put his name in the hat. Sounds like someone is taking their ball and going home.

I think I would take the advice of Tired.....they have been there and done that. Any kind of cancer treatment anywhere is a crap shoot

I am a cancer survivor and part of my treatment included chemotherapy. It's rough...but, saved my life. I would take the treatment again. University Hospital and Dr. Townsend were wonderful!

mercyme

I would go to Emory instead of MCG any day!!!!!!!!!!

blondietoo007

Me too - gas up the car and take me to Emory!!!!

Doesn't anyone find it odd that the new acting director is senior associate Dean of Administration in the School of Medicine and the person saying how great this will be for MCG is the Dean for the School of Medicine? Sounds to me like he was forced out so that Dean Miller could get someone in who would bow to his wishes. Otherwise, why would Dean Miller have to make the comment that “His administrative duties have been reassigned, at his choice."

It's ok...as part of his deal to come to MCG, he insisted on the complete renovation of his office which included a very large bathroom that only he has access to. There is no telling how much taxpayers had to pay so he did not have to go peepee with the rest of us.

There is a story here that we will never come out. Too many times butting heads with the dean of the school. Employees defaming other employees in emails while their boss (Mark) stands by and does nothing. A secretary that is out of control and doing all she can to build her own little empire. Someone needs to shake this place up.
