Gary refuses special last meal

  • Follow Latest News

ATLANTA — Carlton Gary, known as the "Columbus Stocking Strangler," has declined a special last meal before his execution.

The Georgia Department Corrections says in a statement that Gary will be served the same meal as other inmates before his execution: a grilled cheeseburger, oven-browned potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw, cookies and a grape drink.

Gary has a hearing set for Monday before the state Board of Pardons and Paroles. Unless the board changes his sentence to life without parole, life with the possibility of parole or grants a stay of execution, Gary is set to be executed at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the state prison at Jackson.

Gary was convicted in three of seven "stocking strangler" slayings in Columbus in 1986. The victims were strangled with their own stockings.

I'm crushed. Today I'm a bleeding heart liberal. Ok. Some days I'm a right wing conservative on here, some days I'm a liberal, even when I just post facts instead of my personal opinion. Some people can't distinguish between the two, but whatever.

Corgi....not ridiculous at all, just asking for a credible source for something you stated as fact. If it is indeed, a fact, you should have no problem citing said source saying that the 8th amendment 'was specifically written so that the US wouldn't do what Great Britain had done with its prisoners- which was, lock them up and starve them.'
However, since you are apparently unable to cite ANY such source, the natural reaction (of the know-it-all type) is to attack someone asking where you got that information.

I really don't consider your

I really don't consider your lack of knowledge of history my problem, but I'll try, "The English penal system and transportation to the colonies
Two systems

By the mid-18th century there were two prison systems in England. The first involved the counties and shires and was administered by Justices of the Peace (JPs).

These institutions ranged from simple lock-ups to Elizabethan houses of correction. They were intended for the discipline of unemployed and wandering labourers.

The government also ran a second, smaller system in London. Newgate was the main prison in London and from 1783 it was also a place for public hangings. Before then, prisoners had left Newgate to be hanged at Tyburn. The gallows at Tyburn stood near what is now Marble Arch.

Rise of the American penal colonies

As the prison population grew during the 18th century, the government started to send convicts from Newgate and the county prisons to overseas penal colonies.
At first they were shipped to North America for (usually) seven years for non-capital offences ." Do you know how the first white settlers came to the STATE OF GEORGIA, for Pete's sake, or did you sleep through that part too?

Corgi, apparently the problem

Corgi, apparently the problem lies not in my understanding of history, but in your problems with basic reading comprehension. I asked you to CITE A SOURCE (do you understand that term?) showing that the 8th Amendment was 'specifically written' as it was to prohibit the US from starving prisoners as they did in GB. All I get is a copy and paste from some random history website that mentions NOTHING regarding the cruel and unusual punishments inflicted, another attack on my character for asking you to back up your statements and some off-topic BS regarding the first white settlers who came to GA. As you've referenced education several times, I can only imagine the dismal grades you received if you were no better at answering a direct question when you were in school.
