Vincent Helmly Jr., 19, of Savannah, was booked into the Chatham County jail at 9 a.m., charged with discharging a gun near a public street and discharging a firearm on another person’s property. He later was released on $1,300 bond.

Early Friday afternoon, police say, Helmly fatally shot the doe as it roamed in the Wallace Circle neighborhood, then loaded it in his truck bed and drove off.

A neighbor reported the licence plate number, according to police documents.

“Our main concern was the danger posed to the community, going in a subdivision and shooting guns like that,” Bloomingdale Police Chief Thomas Gossett said. “His decision was very poor, and we’re not going to tolerate that.”

Joan Carter, a Wallace Circle resident, had cared for the deer since her family came upon it during a fishing trip in Claxton two years ago.

Named Bambi by Carter’s 7-year-old granddaughter, the deer often trotted around the block, accepting treats and affection from neighborhood residents.

Gossett said Helmly, a licensed hunter, will have a court hearing in January.

thankgodforaugusta, you are heartless and not to bright to make that kind of statement. I am sure it wouldn't be a bfd if you got shot of if someome came into your neighboorhood and discharged a weapon and one of your children got shot because the person missed it wouldn't be a bfd either. Go back under your rock.

If the deer hadn't been named

If the deer hadn't been named "Bambi" by a 7 year old, the story wouldn't be nearly as dramatic.

Deer aren't pets, they are wild animals. They are wild animals that kick, bite, carry diseases, and can kill people. There are some nutty people around.

Notreally, you have an appropriate name. Did you hunt those birds with a weapon that would kill a deer? Corgimom, deer are wild animals, bu apprently this one was a small fawn when found and cared for by the family. Seems the neighbors like the deer also. BTW, when were you last bitten by a deer or know some one who was?

Female deer leave their fawns

Female deer leave their fawns alone while they hunt for food. They also leave them alone when they think they are in danger, to protect the fawn. Only stupid people take fawns away from where they are found. And jack, that would be when I lived in Wisconsin, where there were deer 365 days a year. Yes, deer most certainly do bite when they are cornered. Do you know of any wild animal with teeth that doesn't?

I am definietly not against hunting of any form, however, I do have a problem with people taking it upon themselves to shoot a gun in a neighborhood. Even the police chief said it was the main concern was the danger posed when the person went into a subdivision and fired a gun.

It was wrong of this kid to

It was wrong of this kid to kill the deer, pet or not. Discharging firearms in a neighborhood should not be tolerated. So score one for the police in pressing charge's for that.
I'd hate to think because someone see's a *wild* animal roaming my neighborhood, they start firing.
Pet deer are more common then some may think, like it or not, they are out there and they deserve to LIVE!

This ain't Disney y'all. All

This ain't Disney y'all. All this jerk did was give the PETA crowd more ammo for the anti-hunting campain. He needs to be charged for his crime, but what about charging the woman who was "caring" for the deer. Last I looked, keeping wildlife as pets was against the law itself.

A gun wielding dummy that characterizes much of the so called sport. Shooting a domesticated animal in a neighborhood in near vicinity of people. His gun and vehicle should be confiscated and he should be banned from hunting and owning a gun.

Deer aren't domesticated

Deer aren't domesticated animals. And this is a perfect example of why no one should attempt to have a wild animal as a pet. They trained it to overcome its natural fear of humans. They are as much to blame as the man is.
