Clarke mother, stepfather indicted in torture of boy

ATHENS, Ga. -- A Clarke County grand jury has charged a man and woman with 17 felonies for allegedly torturing the woman's son by locking him naked and handcuffed in a closet, shooting him with a pellet gun and subjecting him to other forms of abuse.

Damita Devonna Peak, the victim's mother, was charged with eight counts of aggravated assault, five counts of first-degree child cruelty and four counts of false imprisonment.

The indictment returned Tuesday charges the victim's mother, Damita Devonna Peak, and stepfather, Norris Lazarus Walker, each with eight counts of aggravated assault, five counts of first-degree child cruelty and four counts of false imprisonment.

The state Department of Family and Children Services placed the victim and his younger brother with a foster family after authorities in Oconee County arrested the parents last Dec. 11, a few weeks after they moved from Athens to Bogart.

The Athens Banner-Herald didn't publish Walker and Peak's name last year in order to protect the victim's identity, but this week's indictment shows the boy doesn't have the same last name as either his mother or stepfather.

Authorities opened the case a year ago Friday, when a 6-year-old boy told his teacher in Oconee County that his parents were abusing his brother, then 12. School officials immediately notified authorities, and deputies arrested Walker and Peak that afternoon.

The victim's body, including his genitals, was riddled with more than 100 wounds from pellets fired from a gun at close range, officials said.

Walker and Peak shot him in the closet where, they handcuffed him naked to a clothes bar and left him a pail to use as a toilet, officials said. They also pepper-sprayed him, according to authorities.

Peak briefly was employed as a jailer in Walton County and had handcuffs and pepper spray, said Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry.

The boy remained locked in the closet for "significant" periods of time, officials said, and when the couple let him out they tied him up in other parts of the house and made him sleep on the kitchen floor.

The boy drew pictures to show investigators how he was abused, including an image of a child facing a wall on his knees, handcuffed and tied, officials said.

The stepfather admitted to investigators that he punished the boy for, among other things, taking a can of corn to eat, according to the sheriff.

An Oconee County grand jury indicted Walker and Peak in February, each on five counts of false imprisonment and child cruelty, and two counts of aggravated assault.

Jurors charged the victim's mother with two additional counts of aggravated assault.

The Clarke County grand jury indicted Walker and Peak for similar crimes, and added that the couple made the victim stand in a corner with his arms extended "for excessive and continuous periods of time."

The couple made the young victim suffer "cruel and excessive physical and emotional pain," according to the indictment.

Peak and Walker moved from Florida to Georgia, but officials are not sure when, or how long, they lived in Athens. Investigators learned they lived in Loganville in June 2006, and that Peak worked as a Walton County jailer for about five months.

Thankfully, the little brother knew enough to tell an adult. This sickens me that people hurt children like this. In prison, he'll likely get alot worse torture. If NOT I know a few people that would like to be in a room with him for a few minutes.

Bottom of the food chain in prison. Dont drop the soap! Good luck with your new boyfriend(s).

This made me cry:(

citizenna

how can people have this much hatred in their hearts?

Just me 2

This is so sad. Please,God Bless those two little precious boys and please help them to get over this and have better lives.
Amen

This story is horrendous. This INNOCENT child was REALLY being tortured. And libs are crying about the music being too loud at Gitmo for people that want us all wiped off the earth.

ripjones

Strip, handcuff, blow both knees, let rot. Repeat.

So many of these people would give these kids up for adoption where they might have a good life, if only these kids weren't their meal ticket.

themaninthemirror

These two people should face afirjng squad, naked, and handcuffed. The firing squad should have pellet guns and be instructed not to kill these people, but inflict injuries that cause severe pain. Then when these people are severely bleeding they should be taken to the Okefonokee swamp and be slowly lowered into an alligator pit. Then snatch them up at the last minute, and then slowly lower them agin, until they are begging and screaming for their lives. Then just cut thew ropes and let then be alligator food. But then the alligators would have to be killed because they would be contaminated by this human feces.I have a better idea, just drop them into a sewer system and let them rot with the rest of the feces. The only other thing these people deserve is a front row furnace seat in hell.

This coupld should be treated (for a number of years) in the same fashion as they treated this young boy. If they had hated him so much, they should and given him to someone who would love him. Stick them both in jail, and let the other inmates know what they did to a child. They will get treatment that would put their treatment of their son to same. My prayers go to the boys and I hope they will get the counseling they need to let them know that this treatment was NEVER their fault and that they will be able to forget (or at least, put behind them), that their parents were so pitiful as the treat ANYONE this way, much less a child that was dependent on them. Punished for taking a can of corn to eat - were they starving him as well. Let them go hungry and see how it feels.

My God, that poor boy. This kind of thing just sickens me. I know its wrong, but i hope they get many years of special treatment in prison. I'd even front the cigarettes.

Crimes like this warrant the death penalty IMO.

ripjones

I stand corrected...'themaninthemirror' has a much better punishment, than I thought of. I've always liked the swamp....

HotFoot

I am pro-death penalty (not as rare in a liberal as you might think) and I think it should apply to people like this. They don't deserve to draw breath in this world.

happychimer

Lola this has nothing to do with liberals or Gitmo. It is about adults abusing an innocent little boy. I am sick of adults abusing, raping, and killing children, and then judges give the criminal a slap on the wrist. I hope this child recovers. I hope one day he will know that there are people who care about him.

happychimer

HotFoot I agree with your 9:16.

poolmom

I think we should do the same thing they did to their son to them. This really broke my heart. How can some people be so cruel to sweet innocent children!

JacquesUlar

chimer, you voted for, and still apparently support, an abortion proponent. At least this kid is still alive. I don't know how you sleep at night.

mommie2

I'm not a weepy person but this made me cry. What upsets me almost as much as the torture this child received is how it will affect the rest of his life. I hope he doesn't get caught in the system. I pray to God he gets the emotional help he needs to be a productive member of society. And I hope these monsters get what is coming to them.

thankgodforaugusta

jacques your an idiot yea that kid was real lucky god you abortion people are stupid

happychimer

JacquesUlar I sleep real good at night. Apparently you don't know anything about me.

LolaJean

Happerchimer, I agree with you. My point is that these despicable actions are the ones that need yours and my outcry. Not the fake poisonous insects or the loud music interrogation techniques, that are only being taken to get info that might save countless american lives. Maybe your child's life?

themaninthemirror

I apologize for all the typo's in my my 8:46 posting, there is a problem with the AC's posting software that will not allow corrections to be made and I did not proofread before hitting the Post button. But , I thinkeveryone gets my point.

corgimom

I just wonder what Justnuts will say about this one. I don't think he'll post on this story.

Lola this story has nothing to do with Gitmo or any political party. It has to do with 2 grown adults who should face the death penalty for what they did to that innocent little boy.

JacquesUlar

At least they didn't abort him, he still has a chance for recovery.

reesiecup

The perfect punishment has already been laid out... do the exact same tthing to them that they did to this precious child. These two should rot in hell.
