Clemson QB plans to transfer

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson quarterback Willy Korn announced today he won’t be suiting up with the Tigers next fall.

The redshirt sophomore said he will graduate in May with a degree in communications, then transfer to another school, in hopes of playing as a starting quarterback.

He has two years of eligibility remaining.

“I have truly enjoyed my experience at Clemson University. I was very blessed and fortunate to have had the opportunity to play football and go to school here,” Korn said in a release. “Things didn’t work out for me on the football field the way I had hoped. ... I really want to go where I can contribute as a starter.”

In his three years at Clemson, he’s completed 46 of 66 passes for 406 yards and three touchdowns. He has a 69.7 completion percentage and a passing efficiency of 130.3.

The backup passer was considered one of the country’s top prospects when he arrived on campus in January 2007. But he was beaten out for the starting job this fall by Kyle Parker.

In 2007, Korn played in two of the first three games, completing 8 of 11 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown. But he suffered an injury and was granted an injury hardship year.

He played in six games last year, including one start and completed 26 of 38 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown. He started Dabo Swinney’s first game as head coach against Georgia Tech in October 2008, but left in the opening quarter after taking a hit as he threw a pass.

Korn had surgery last December to fix damaged cartilage in his right, throwing shoulder.

He has played in six games this year, completing 12 of 17 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.

He will continue to practice with the team and be available to play when Clemson (8-5) plays Kentucky (7-5) in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 27.

Swinney said he understands Korn’s decision.

“Willy Korn has set a great example for every student-athlete in our program,” Swinney in a release. “He has represented this institution in a positive manner in everything he has done the last three years. That includes his work ethic in practice and in games, and the way he has carried himself around his teammates and as a student.”
