Legendary football coach to return to Thomson

THOMSON - Luther Welsh, athletic director and head football coach at Thomson High School, has decided to stay on “at least another year.”

The 77-year-old coach Welsh said he feels relieved and looks forward to returning to lead the Bulldogs in their quest to once again become competitive in football. His Bulldogs finished with a dismal 2-8 record this past season – his only losing season in 18 years at Thomson.

“I had a heart-to-heart talk with the principal and school superintendent about two weeks ago and I told them then that I would come back for at least another year,” coach Welsh said today.

Welsh has led Thomson to three state championships. His overall coaching record is 324-178-6

Coach Welsh has proven time

Coach Welsh has proven time and again he's a great coach and has nothing to prove. He should retire and make way for a younger person to try their wings.

324 wins is pretty good for a high school coach. But at his age, does he want to spend his retirement looking back at a losing year. Let's give him another chance, and see if he can go out at the top of his game!

The people of McDuffie County

The people of McDuffie County love the Coach and his family dearly. We sincerely hope that he will retire in our community. However, I think many are not anxious to see another Bobby Bowden scenario. God bless the legend. . . the man.

He's just in the way, holding up a job for somebody else, I guess his thinking is I started with a blaze winning of glory, I will end with a blaze of winning glory. But, what if his glory winning days are over and have been? how much longer before he sinks in that his time has passed?

his time may have passed but

his time may have passed but take a look at what he has to work with--little or no talent, no respect for him or the other coachs and they don't want to play as a team. If you have nothing to work with what can you do?
