Officer charged in gasoline thefts

COLUMBIA — A police officer in a rural South Carolina town has been charged with stealing $191 worth of gasoline.

The State Law Enforcement Division says that 51-year-old Springfield officer John Fulmer was arrested today and charged with petty larceny and misconduct in office.

Arrest warrants accuse Fulmer of charging the town for fuel he pumped into his personal vehicle. Affidavits say employee time sheets and video recordings at the gas station record the thefts between July and November.

Orangeburg County jail records show that Fulmer spent several hours there before being released today on a $10,000 bond. It was unclear if he had an attorney. His Barnwell home number is unlisted.

Springfield is about 55 miles south of Columbia.

Imagine that, public officials being charged for putting gas in their personal vehicles. The poor guy is on the wrong side of the river. As much gas as Andy Cheek put in his own car when he was a Richmond County Commissioner, he better be glad he lost the election in N. Augusta if they arrest you for that.

Hold on hoss, andy was not the only one nor was he the worst violator--why are you pointing him out alone?

It is a shame we put up with misappropriation of funds in Richmond County ... From the outside looking in N.Augusta runs a much tighter ship ... Mr. Cheeks would have been in shock what standards they hold to had he won that election ...

"Hold on hoss, andy was not the only one nor was he the worst violator.." You're right. He was number two by a very few gallons. But he was a nice guy and had a long drive to work every day at SRS. What the heck.

It depends on what county policy says. In some cases certain elected officials are allowed to charge gas and other expenses to the county.

My word - I know that all of Augusta is just spell bound - should be when it comes to local big wig crooks. In rural South Carolina - goodness knows what is behind this exciting story.

Just wondering,,,, what does a rural S.C. policeman make in a year??

Speed trap Springfield.....Other than a good flea market theres not much else to see.

1941- Yes, it is news. He is being charged... How much was his integrity worth? $191. What a chump. All of the hard work that goes into getting the job and he throws it away for a few tanks of gas. Sad.

Mike_Futrell

In North Augusta they don't steal gas for their personal vehicles, they just waste it in their police cars. Who hasn't witnessed North Augusta's finest flooring it from one gas station to another just to sit and idle while talking to one of their fellow officers?

robbie - He is still INNOCENT until proven guilty!
