Antonio Daniel Willis, 27, was pronounced dead about 9 p.m. at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital after being shot on the right side of his neck, said Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald.
An autopsy was planned at the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Augusta crime lab, Mr. McDonald said.
Mr. Willis and his girlfriend had been at his Sunset Villas apartment off the 1700 block of Essie McIntyre Boulevard when a man wearing a ski mask knocked on the door and the girlfriend answered, Mr. McDonald said investigators told him.
The man demanded money and a shot went off from the suspect’s rifle, which was described as like an AK47, Mr. McDonald said.
Mr. Willis was sitting on the couch at the time, he said.
