STATESBORO, GA. -- Georgia Tech slotbacks coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Monken was named today the next Georgia Southern head football coach.

Monken, who was an assistant coach under Paul Johnson from 1997-2001, replaced Chris Hatcher who was fired Nov. 21 after compiling a 5-6 record.

As a GSU assistant, Monken helped the Eagles to national championships in 1999 and 2000.

Monken remained an assistant with Johnson, who moved to Navy as head coach in 2001 and later Georgia Tech in 2008.

Monken was considered one of Johnson's top offensive assistants in the unique triple option offense. This season, Tech is 10-2 and will play in the ACC championship game against Clemson next Saturday in Tampa, Fla.
