Jon Maish said he hoped to reach at least one person on Thanksgiving Day.
We just want to show the love of Jesus in a practical way, Mr. Maish said. Its amazing what an hour of your time can do.
Mr. Maish and other Warren Baptist Church members delivered hot meals to residents at Maxwell House apartments Thanksgiving Day.
Hundreds of volunteers made, packaged and delivered meals to about 600 homebound Augustans today for the Augusta Rescue Mission, said executive director Rusty Marsh. The mission started the tradition of delivering Thanksgiving meals to the needys doorsteps several years ago, he said. Several volunteers throughout the area used the day of thanks to give back to the community.
Mr. Maish said praying with the residents at Maxwell House, and seeing their response to the meals made his day.
A meal and a smile goes a long way, said Sylvia Glover, president of Serenity Charity and Social Club. She and 15 other club members have delivered meals to the sick and elderly for the past three years. Today the group members began cooking at 9 a.m., and delivered meals for most of the day. They delivered about 100 meals today.
It just does your heart good, she said. They are so grateful, too. Just to have someone to talk to, and a meal to enjoy. You can see it on their faces.
Donald Campbell, Phase I manager at the rescue mission, said he has delivered meals to Augustans the past two years. He said he tells those he meets each year about how he once sold drugs and how he turned his life around.
Most of them have lost their jobs," he said of those he delivers meals to. "Theyve lost everything. Its not just about feeding them. Its about giving them hope.
