JACKSON, Ga. — Georgia Power says Gov. Sonny Perdue has been asked to remove the dirt dredged from near his vacation home and dumped into Lake Jackson last month.
Perdue owns a vacation home on the lake. The Macon Telegraph newspaper reported that a neighbor spotted heavy equipment removing soil from Perdue's mud-clogged boat slip and dumping it farther into the lake.
Georgia Power spokeswoman Konswello Monroe says the company, which owns the lake, has issued a permit for Perdue to remove the soil in December when the water level is drawn down.
Monroe says the 5 cubic yards of soil will be moved to higher ground.
Perdue's spokesman, Bert Brantley, says the governor stopped dredging as soon as he was informed that a permit was needed.

As someone who lives on the river, I'd never criticize anyone from digging out mud from around their dock, but to dump it out in the water is beyond classless. CharlieManson makes a good point, about the equipment. Was it state owned equipment?
I lived on the Chesapeake Bay for many years and watched dredging equipment move sludge from the channels into our marina and dump it several hundred yards out. It always made sense to me, as long as they weren't dropping it back into a channel. I'll bet that a political opponent of Sonny is behind this.
