NRC, MOX contractor reach settlement

  • Follow Latest News

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the primary contractor building the U.S. Energy Department’s $4.86 billion mixed oxide fuel facility at Savannah River Site have negotiated a settlement to a violation in which a senior contract engineer allowed a junior engineer to sign his name to construction documents.

Such an act was in violation of NRC regulations, the agency contended. The contractor, Shaw AREVA MOX Services, requested a process known as alternative dispute resolution in which a mediator helps the two parties find the best way to address the cause of the violation.

The resulting confirmatory order requires the company to adhere to a number of corrective actions and enhancements, including reviews of similar documents, revised procedures, increased training, and periodic quality assurance assessments and safety conscious work environment surveys, according to a news release issued today by the NRC. Some of the actions agreed to by Shaw AREVA have been completed and others must be completed by the end of next year.

In consideration of the commitments made by Shaw AREVA, the NRC will not propose a civil penalty, issue a Notice of Violation or take other enforcement action on the matter.

What about the undocumented

What about the undocumented workers which the DOE Inspector General's office found working at the MOX plant? The socialists are spending money so fast at the MOX project that NRC violations and the hiring of undocumented workers is of little real concern. Full speed ahead with this big-government project which aims to spend the tax payers' hard-earned money as fast as possible!
