The former cape man for the late entertainer James Brown is behind bars on a drug charge.

Daniel Brown Ray, 74, of Augusta, was charged Friday on possession of cocaine. He remained in the Richmond County Jail on Monday on a $4,600 bond, according to jail personnel.

Mr. Ray, known to millions as the voice behind Mr. Brown's singular introductions and the man who would offer Mr. Brown a cape, was arrested after police say they watched him drive a 1983 Lincoln Towncar in front of a known drug house in the 2600 block of Mill Street about 5:40 p.m. Friday and then conduct a transaction with a man who approached the vehicle, a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office report states.

An investigator was conducting surveillance at the time and radioed a deputy to stop Mr. Ray’s vehicle. Mr. Ray agreed to a search, and police say they found a 0.2-gram loose piece of crack cocaine in Mr. Ray’s left suit vest pocket, according to the report.

After Mr. Brown’s death in December 2006, Mr. Ray was without the gig that had sustained him for nearly 50 years and fell into financial difficulty. He was $18,000 in debt at one point and faced the possibility of losing his home, according to Augusta Chronicle archives.

In February 2008 alumni of James Brown's famously funky touring acts reunited to perform a benefit concert for Mr. Ray.

Then uses his charity funds to buy drugs. Fitting...just fitting. Nice mug shot by the way.

He looks very sad just like he did in the "who killed James Brown" video on you tube. How much to bail him out is it 460 dollars? It would be cool to have him doing the introductions at the company Christmas party. Just think everyone who walks in the door get introduced like James Brown! But I get introduced as "the hardest working man"!

Sad. What fools we mortals be.

If it's a known drug house, what would it take to take it down? How long has it been "known" to be a known drug house? I was wondering the same thing about the recent bust at another "known" drug house on Shelby near Hummingbird? How many "known" drug houses are there in the city and what do we have to do to shut them down???

He worked for James Brown for almost 50 years and didn't save a penny? Guess what he did have went up his nose. It's hard to imagine someone in their 70's snorting coke..........What a sad and pathetic waste of a life.

I have to agree with humbleopinion. This man had a good job for 50 years and someone needed to hold a benefit for him?

sll anyone can see is the glitter and glamour of 50 yrs introducing Mr. Brown. Nobody can see the inner demons an individual has to carry around daily and sometimes those demons are too much to bear. No person is without sin. Danny Ray needs to evaluate his choices in life and we as humans should pray for his delivrance. We can hide from the world but we can never hide from ourselves. The old quote "To thine ownself be true." Mr.Ray needs to be true to himself so he can move on and find peace.
