Brown turkey giveaway set for Monday, but still needs donations

The James Brown Turkey Giveaway is 50 turkeys shy of its giving goal, and the community can still help.

Annette M. Drowlette/File
(from left to right) Augusta mayor Deke Copenhaver, the Rev. Al Sharpton, and then state Sen. Ed Tarver helped giveaway turkeys at the annual James Brown Turkey Giveaway in 2008.

Deanna Brown Thomas, daughter of the Godfather of Soul and president of the Brown Family Foundation, said she sought donations from the community and other donors to ensure that the giveaway, which takes place 10 a.m. Monday at Dyess Park, would meet or exceed last year’s total of 1,000 turkeys granted. The foundation will accept donations up until 9 a.m. Monday for the 19th annual event, she said.

“Things are looking great,” Mrs. Thomas said. “A lot of businesses and individuals have looked out and donated.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton, Ed Tarver, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, and others will be on hand to give out turkeys, Mrs. Thomas said. Politicians, public figures and businesses annually donate the Thanksgiving Day vittles, but this year it was especially important to get the community involved.

“It’s probably going to be a little disheartening at some point, because so many people are having it rough with pay cuts and layoffs,” she said. “I know we’re not going to be able to help everybody, but I’m hoping and praying we can bless those who do receive.”

Continuing the giveaway without Mr. Brown, who died on Christmas Day in 2006, is also a difficult feat, said giveaway coordinator Elif Crawford. Before his death, Mr. Brown covered a majority of the expenses of the turkey giveaway and sister toy giveaway, that will take place on Dec. 21.

“Without Mr. Brown, it’s financially a little tougher, but we have had a tremendous response from the community, mayors and business owners,” Mrs. Crawford said.

For the first time, the event will be streamed live on the Brown Family Foundation’s Web site, jamesbrownfamilyfdn.org, live between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Monday, Mrs. Thomas said.

The goal is to show the good works that are, and will continue to be done, in honor of her iconic father. Other events to commemorate her father’s love for giving and music are in the works locally and across the country, she said.

“This is really a community effort, and dad would have loved that. He loved everybody,” Mrs. Thomas said. “Those who can afford will come together for those who can’t.”

Maybe deanna needs to take some of that "brown" money and "buy" some turkeys,, then she could claim that it is a "real" giv-a-way.

baronvonreich

No kidding bettboop. What a bunch of fooey. Why are they having the giveaway at 10am on Monday. Don't these people work or are out looking for work???

APiratesLife4Me

Let ole sharpton buy the Turkey's. Afterall, it is all about his self promotion. I wouldn't donate one penny to that hate mongor.

Dell4

How can it be the "Brown" Turkey give away when they are all donated? Did the Brown family buy any of them? I doubt it. Somebody needs to be watching these people. How about it RCSD.

One who cares

You know all of the above is so true,. This just goes to show everybody---James Brown didn't do anything but say it was his "GIVEAWAY" give me a break when you give something away you don't ask for donations, that would mean I am giving the turkey to a needed family. They probably want us to cook it too. GO GET A JOB PEOPLE- I work for a living and a turkey have Furlough days, so get your lazy butts out there and buy your own TURKEY---I guess at Christmas they want the glory for James Brown Giveaway of Toys--that's a joke too.
Let the Brown Kids go buy Turkeys for their friends or people they grew up with, that's who is gonna get them anyway-=--work--work--work. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF THIS KIND OF STUFF IS THE REASON I DON'T GIVE, CAUSE I WORK HARD THEY CAN TOO.

RealStandupGuy

Every time this "Brown" Turkey Giveaway is mentioned on national TV, it is made to sound as if this is the Brown family donating all of the turkeys. I can't remember hearing anyone mention that it is the generosity of the folks in the CSRA that make it possible. We appreciate James Brown lending his name to this thing, but come on, folks - it's you, not them that should get the credit!

FedupwithAUG

We all know the top 10 reasons James Brown loved t-day. It was the only day of the year he could get away with the following statements 1) Talk about a huge breast 2) Tying the legs together keeps the inside moist 3) If I don't undo my pants I'll burst 4) that's one terrific spread 5) I'm in the mood for a little dark meat 6) You ready for seconds yet? 7) just spread the legs and stuff it in 8) You still have a little bit on your chin 9) You'll know it's ready when it pops out 10) How long will it take after I stick it in?

Tots

OMG-now that was funny.FedupwithAug just wait someones going slam you for that.

bentman

Now that's funny. I don't care who you are.

FedupwithAUG

oops, I didn't even post the good ones.

sassygirl12

can white people stand in line too? i mean its hard for us to even get christmas presents because you all hog everything up...if its free you definately will be there..handouts are always best for you all

FedupwithAUG

I know sassy, I thought about taking off work just to get my free turkey. But then I thought about it and decided I’d save my Paid Time Off for my trip to the Galapagos islands.

Jake

A good deed done in the name of James Brown and all you can do is be critical and cynical. I hope this thing continues and it does get my support.

FrogLegs

Why not ask the Obama folks for some of that good old stimulus money and buy a whole bunch of those turkeys!

Dell4

Hey Jake, How many turkeys did you donate??

ispy4u

Beetyboop, Baron. DUH!!!!! It is a give a way., Most would be out of work in order to be truly needed. If you do not wish to participate, DON'T. Just another chance for people like you to spew your disdain and hatred towards the poor. Oh, I know your hero Reagan stated that there were no real homeless in America. He had an excuse to say that. He lived in a taxpayers paid house and flew everywhere and did not see the homeless sleeping across the street from the White House and underneath the bridges. Other than your high and mighty, holier than thou attitudes, what are your excuses or being so heartless?

ispy4u

DELL4, How is it the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon? Does Jerry Lewis donate all of the money? No,he is simply the host as was James Brown. You haters are missing the whole point of the give a way. Again, if you do not wish to donate, DON'T.Just leave your haterade at the door, and those of us who wish to will do so.

ispy4u

DELL, I donated as I do every year. It is none of your business how much. Oh, I bet you do not mind donating to the Confederate Powder Work restoration?

justthefacts

Wow, manage to work in a shot at former President Reagan. I agree with you btw.

sstea

The problem here is not that they are helping the poor it's the fact that they take credit for giving away turkeys that come from them when in fact they are giving away turkeys that were donated to them for the purpose of giving them to someone else. People wouldn't have a problem if they just called it what it really is instead of making it out like it comes from the James Brown family. Turkeys are cheap, it really wouldn't cost that much for them to buy the 50 additional turkeys and then they could truly take credit for it themselves.

Emerydan

Nothing like brown turkey!

apex24

LOL Ispy say it ain't so. I know you didn't make a racist comment. What a two-faced idiot you are.

CobaltGeorge

One who cares on Fri Nov 20, 2009 5:53 PM , Very Good, but you are darn lucky your post was not removed for using the word "Christmas". I know that offended many people.

CobaltGeorge

Boy, it didn't take long for the "BREAKING: Brown turkey giveaway set for Monday, but still needs donations" to be removed from the top 5. I hope it wasn't for the word "Christmas" used by a poster.

terry67

My question is how many of these ppl really are needy? And how many are GREEDY? Seen it b4, ppl with jobs taking advantage of a charity when the real down-on-their-luck can't get a dime! Oh let me get a "free" turkey so I can spend "my" money on beer, smokes, cell phone, new 'do.....
