A McCormick County Sheriff’s deputy shot in a Sunday shooting is still recovering at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics.

Deputy Robert Rushton is in stable condition at the hospital, and lost one of his fingers and will need surgery to repair nerve damage, said Chief C.E. Gable.

On Sunday, the sheriff’s office charged Joe Ross Worley, 51, of Vanderbilt Drive, Aiken, with assault and battery with the intent to kill, two counts of assault with the intent to kill and three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Chief Gable said.

Deputy Rushton and two other officers were investigating shots fired near a home on Presidents Drive around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. While investigating, the officers saw Mr. Worley appear on a balcony with a rifle, Chief Gable said. The deputies asked the suspect to put down his weapon, but he refused and shot at Deputy Rushton, Chief Gable said. Investigators think Mr. Worley’s shots hit Deputy Rushton’s weapon, causing the weapon to explode in his right hand.

Deputy Rushton has worked with the sheriff’s office since 1998, and had returned from Iraq on Nov. 2 after training military police officers for four years, Chief Gable said.

Mr. Worley remains in the McCormick County Jail.

That decription of events tells the tale of a very lucky man ... Not knowing the cal. of the rifle but Deputy Rushtons weapon in his right hand struck is a one in a million stroke of luck ... I hope for a speedy recovery Deputy and that the shooter get all the courts can throw at him ...

Some Type-o here Investigators think Mr. Gables shots hit Deputy Rushton's weapon causing it to explode in his right hand. I thought Mr. Worley had the rifle and the Chief was Mr Gable?

That was my question on the first story overburdened!! lol Why didn't anyone take this fool out! Since he didn't get the justice he deserves, I hope he at least never gets out of prison for the rest of his life. Maybe his new friends in the big house will give him a little inadvertant justice somehow. My sympathy to Deputy Rushton, I hope you have a smooth speedy recovery. Thank God you are still with us!

REDRIDER, get used to it, that's the norm on here. I mean how long can it take to proofread these tiny articles. If they need someone to do it, I'd be more than happy to at a nice pay. From home for decent pay. haha =)

"Chief Gable said. Investigators think Mr. Gable’s shots " AC, AC, does anybody proofread your stories? Stephanie Toone, FIX
THIS.

With all the cuts the AC has had to make just MAYBE they don't have someone to proofread. Granted there shouldn't be typo's but do you people have nothing better to do than criticize? That is all that's on here is a bunch of negativity. With the number of responses on these "reader responses" by some of you regulars I find it hard to believe that you have a job but surely you have a life. I guess hiding behind these screen names is your thrill.

Ok, now bring it on. I'm sure everybody will start slamming ole sueboo. LOL

Is it wrong to be proud of Augusta, and want our paper to reflect that pride?
