AIKEN - A woman accused of attempting to run over an officer last month was arrested Monday night.
Merita Stephens Carter, 40, was arrested and booked into the Aiken County Detention Center around 10:30 p.m., according to jail records. Ms. Carter is charged with assault with the intent to kill, speeding 63 in a 45 mph zone and reckless driving, according to jail records. She's also being held for other authorities.
Aiken Department of Public Safety received a tip from the Crime Stopper hotline that Ms. Carter was staying at a North Augusta apartment complex Monday afternoon, said Lt. David Turno. They apprehended her later that evening, he said.
Aiken Department of Public Safety deputies pulled Ms. Carter over on Oct. 17 for speeding, Lt. Turno said. She gave the deputy her license, registration and proof of insurance. However, when the officer smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle and asked her to leave the car she refused.
"She drove away, turned around and drove back toward the deputy," Lt. Turno said.
She got away in a black 2005 Nissan Sentra.
She is being held at the jail on a $10,445 bond.

oh, i'm sorry that offended someone. let me rephrase that. she appears to be such a nice young lady, only exercising her right to break the law by excessive speeding. i'm certain the deputy, probably a caucasion male, must've jumped out in front of her. is this nice enough?
She looks repentant. I'm sure that it is just a big misunderstanding so let her go on her own recognizance until the court date.

Crime Stopper Hot Line should be used as often as humanly possible, maybe the ordinary citizens can put a dent into this horrendous crime wave, be it trying to run over deputies or any other crimes that are being observed.
