A bookkeeper at a Martinez custom vehicle business was arrested Friday and charged with embezzling from the business.

Joy Mercer, of the 4500 block of Swan Drive in Evans, was a bookkeeper at Trucks & Moore on Bobby Jones Expressway for about two years. She was charged with felony theft by taking.

“To what extent is unknown,” said Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris. “It’ll take a few days for us to determine the exact amount.”

Larry Moore, owner of the business, discovered the thefts and reported Ms. Mercer to authorities.

Ms. Mercer, 40, was released Friday evening from the Columbia County Detention Center on a $2,600 bond, Capt. Morris said.

These thieves that steal from their employeers do far more harm than they think. Generally speaking, they cost others their raises, inflate prices to consumers, may cause the loss of jobs, and certainly make employers less trusting in the future. These may not be violent crimes but they certainly deserve hard punishment.

soldout

glad you found it Larry. Probably others are doing the same in businesses and organizations around town and hopefully they will be found out soon too.

Now we get to have her family come on here with the usual denial nonsense. How we don't know the whole story, we shouldn't judge her, she has a drug problem, she was desperate, all the usual junk. I wish someone would come on here and say "Yes, my family member did this, we are so ashamed, our family doesn't believe in doing things like that, we are horrified". That would be refreshing.

He who is without sin cast the first stone!

humbleopinion

Did you hear about the guy from Alabama who was caught embezzling from his employer? He was self employed.

JohnQPublic

Yeah and then there's the story about the person who embezzeled and got caught. A family member paid back the money to the employer and then.....the chick had the nerve to come in and ask to have a form filled out for a job reference! No lie and it happened recently.

corgimom

Thank you, freespirited, but I don't steal. When you grow up, you will realize how devasting it is to a business.

TakeAstand

Another loser thief. I'm not suprised. This is why I do all of our booking and finances. It gets harder the more we grow, but you can't harldy trust anyone these days! lol So many criminals are not punished properly and made accountable for their actions, I don;t see it slowing down anytime soon. I totally agree with both your posts corgi. The enablers usually encourage this behavior by making excuses for them.

disssman

What is with women lately? All you read about is them embezzling. I can't wait to see what material things she needed sooo badly.

corgimom

Women usually embezzle because they are in the bookkeeping position to do it. There aren't a lot of male accounting clerks and bookkeepers. And women like to do the non-violent, non-confrontation crimes.

An accounting lady 6 years ago embezzled $36,000.00 from my son's corporation. The great judical system gave her 5 years probation and was required to pay back $135.00 per month. She is no longer on probation and is not required to make any more payments. It can be profitable.

This woman thought she will never go caught and she will cover her tracks theft is one of the biggest crime now and they see some people that get charger some just get a hit on the hand and some get more time than other. their was lady in fort lauderdale steal 1.5 million dollars from workforce one a center that help people find and she stel some from 2 of her past jobs and now she serving 10 in florida state prison this lady income yearly 30.000 and she was living like a person 100.000 a year she had 3 houses and how her company find out she was putting money in her account was a teller at her credit union 3 times a month she would put 25.000 in her account and she did it for 4 years before it was noticed that she was stealing and they repo all that of value she own and wen she get out she have to repay 1.5 million dollars back and she have life probation

crackerjack

954baybay are you the Augusta Chronicle copy editor?

NotyourDadsBuick

This sort of stuff happens all the time, unfortunately. Doesn't make it right, but doesn't make it very newsworthy, either.

KSL

I can't imagine stealing from an employer. Worked for years, also handled the bookkeeping. I was definitely underpaid for what I did.

JewellofDeNile

I agree with "Asitisinaug". The impact after the crime is far greater than an enabler realizes. I can do without a THIEF and a LIAR; family or not!

Just My Opinion

I agree with 954baybay....I think. Well, I'm not exactly sure what she said, and I kinda got a headache from reading it, but I do applaud her effort. Hey, it's the longest comment on here so far, so you gotta give her that. Oh, it's late, and after reading her post, I'm taking some aspirin and going to bed! Night baybay!

xanadu

gee, what is it with the chicks around here and the embezzling? another one. maybe she saw terra taylor's pic in the paper and decided she wants her fifteen nanoseconds of fame too? obviously we won't be seeing any of these 'ladies' on the 'mastermind' show on tru tv anytime soon.

xanadu

JustMyOpinion: ok, i had to go back and read that post, just out of curiosity. you are indeed one brave person to have actually 'read' the whole thing because i only got through the first sentence or two and had to give up due to the incoherency, bad syntax, atrocious grammer and spelling. you must have a migraine by now.

willienelson

She should go into teaching. Couldn't do any harm there.

CANUSEE

you never know what you would do if you were in her shoes - so don't be to quick to judge. all of us are one paycheck away from being broke. i don't agree with her taking the money and i never would.

RushLimbuttbubba

CBolt...I am sorry to hear that.Did your son ever get his money back?

WW1949

I take care of all my companys money and deposit it myself. Invoice all work myself and write all subcontractor checks. I also keep up with all the accounts receivables. It takes a long time but worth it. I also have a long time employee that does the books and is paid well by bonuses when the company does well.

corgimom

It happens a lot. It happens in businesses that do not have proper internal controls. If you don't have those controls, and if you don't really know your workers before you hire them (and even then sometimes it happens), the chances for theft are very, very high.

butler123

lol crackerjack, that was painful.

corgimom

Yes, I would know what I'd do in her shoes, because I've been poor. I don't steal. Why didn't she get a second job if she needed money so badly? If she "needed" the money, which I doubt, what is she going to do now that she doesn't have a job? Steal more?
