School board committee approves "saggy" pants policy

Richmond County school board members have given initial approval today to a policy banning so-called “saggy pants” from after school events such as football games.

The vote came at this afternoon’s school board committee meetings. The policy, which now must receive the full board’s approval at its Nov. 17 meeting, would be enforced by school officials, administrators, teachers and other school employees on duty at such events. It states that all pants, including jeans, must be fitted at the waist and not be baggy or oversized or exposing underwear.

“Provocative clothing and baggy pants that do not fit properly are prohibited,” the policy states.

Public notices would be posted at events, and anyone not complying would not be allowed into an event. Already, a system-wide policy prohibits saggy pants that show a student's underwear during classes. It's up to principals to decide whether students must also tuck in their shirts. The proposed policy for school events outside classes doesn't address shirts.

The proposal to restrict saggy pants at extracurricular school events was first made in an Oct. 13 board committee meeting by board Vice President Alex Howard, who said he had noticed students wearing pants low enough to show their underwear at some football games.

As a former school teacher, I feel confident predicting that this policy will be a nightmare to enforce. And we wonder why most of the good teachers leave the school system . . .

mystery30815

Ummm they can't enforce this rule in the schools, how are they going to do it at football games?

JohnQPublic

They'll probably turn them away at the gate. Why would a guy want to wear pants advertising his butt and underwear anyway???

No policy should be a nightmare to enforce in school. If it is those kids don't need to be there if they can not respect authority and if the parents don't like it, tough. Thats whats wrong, so many people give in to the whiney parents and bad a$^ kids. If kids can't respect authority in school, don't let them attend. They can pull their schooling in alternative school or ydc!! The kids who do have respect and a desire to learn shouldn't suffer because of these kids whose parents were to lazy to raise them correctly! And if the good teachers leave because of it and can nto enforce the policies, that tells you even more the school has no control over these kids and something drastic needs to be done. Schools should not be controlled by the students, thats when you end up with a p.o.s troubled school!

Let's give it a try. We must start somewhere. Sooo, Let the nightmare begin and any teacher or former school teacher who cannot be for it should keep their negative mouths closed. We must try to take our children back from the people who are leading them down a very dark path. Most of the good teachers leave because they don't have support for a good cause. Get a policy and stay with it. God bless the school board, the teachers who try, the students who listen and God bless the tax paying people of Richmond Co. who want to see changes for the better in our schools.

Why- many teachers would love to support these types of things. Problem is administrators pick and choose who they enforece what rules on. A teacher can write a student up for dress code, but if the administrator doesn't "agree" or happens to really like the kid, nothing is done about it.

The barely covered gluteal shown on Chanel 12 seems to take all of the challenge out of being a gay stalker. Any rape of these flashers would seem to be justified. What a fashion statement. Enforcing it should be easy. Toss all twenty glute flashers from each school and the problem should be over. Gag...freaks are always repulsive.

The problem is that parents, being family, aren't offended by it. But the people at school aren't family, and they are offended. Our society sets certain boundaries for modesty and personal privacy. We don't want to see certain parts of other people's bodies. And yes, it's disruptive.

smartie

i've got a better idea. why don't we ban them everywhere. and, also, maybe the local sheriff's department could write a few excessive noise tickets as well. i'm sick of hearing wrap music blaring into my car at gas stations and red lights. i'm sick of hearing obnoxious motorcycles, and automobiles, parading up and down the road.

AugustaVoter

I hope BOE Police will start writing indecent exposure tickets to all who do not obey the rules.

grouse

don't wear underwear! ;)

WhippingPost

smartie, if you try to fix everything at one time, you'll be immediately overwhelmed. While loud music in the street is irritating, it's in a barely restricted area. Loud music on school grounds is easily controlled, because it's in a limited and partially contained area. See, it's not nearly as impossible as you thought.

WhippingPost

LOL, grouse. Talk about no challenge at all for the gay stalker...

They have the rule in the schools but it is not enforced so how is it going to be enforced at a school function ? There are lots of rules NOT enforced in Richmond County Schools.

Re Smartie: yes! the boom! boom! boom! coming from parked, empty cars makes me want to break something. And as someone else said, why are rules not enforceable in school? I know I am an old curmudgeon, but we were scared of our teachers, really scared of the principal and terrified of Dad. Dad would put the belt on you. What happened?

TechLover

"all pants, including jeans, must be fitted at the waist". Does that mean grandpa, whose pants are fitted at the armpits won't be allowed to enter?

ChipSuhoi

LOL techlover - Gotta give ya that one. Thanks for the early laugh!

wizzardx1

someone should tell these children just what wearing their pants so low REALLY means.it came from prison where the wearing of pants so low means that person is "available" and willing.

Where is the conservative outrage...someone is telling people how to dress, what next are they going to tell us what to eat and where we can live. That said, I'm all for the ban I think these young men don't realize how ignorant they look. Just taking an opportunity point out the obvious. The right is quick to point out how they should have their freedom and the government needs to leave them alone. Funny, that only applies when they want it to.

sstea

yvalentine6: That's the problem in schools - students are not afraid of anything and not all administrators back teachers up the way they should. When I was in school a call home would be the kiss of death. Today if you tell a student you are going to call home they tell you to go right ahead and they let me know that it doesn't matter because their parents are not going to do anything to them. You would be surprised by the number of parents who do not even provide a working phone number to the schools to begin with.

leaveitatthedoor

I do understand the thought behind this ruling but what I dont understand is they are trying to stop this practice while girls are allowed to dress like ho's in school and at school functions. Most walk around with their breast hanging out and then these parents want to complain when these girls get approached by boys. I dont think either on is appropriate and to solve this problem the school really should have uniforms and as a student should be required to wear them at all school functions. I have 3 daughters and I as a parent monitor what my girls are wearig and dont just drop them off at games or the mall to run free. I think these types of situations start at home and parents should be required to go to a parenting class as the child moves from one school to the next to learn what signs to watch for entering elementary, middle and high school. All these problems start with the parents..... they cant teach if the dont know and should be held accountable ===PERIOD !

^ gret comment, Y r they only targeting the "saggy pants" when a "naked teenage girl" has the potential to cause more problems. I was riding home the other day and saw a young girl walking onWindsor Spring Rd. She had on knee hih boots, a short skirt, and a tight top. First thing I thought, "Y did the administration allow this student to stay @ school ALL DAY dressed like this"? I could not tell if she was in middle school or highschool

I think this is a bigger problem than saggy pants, but who mostly wears saggy pants. . . . . . . . .EXACTLY!

Ah, WhippingPost, you must have outdone yourself to get all your comments removed.

The majority of this great nation has yelled and voted "We Want Change" We the majority don't want morals to be in this change. If it was good for Bill Clinton it is good for us. Will now you got it!!

To mystery30815. Ummm they can't enforce this rule in the schools, how are they going to do it at football games?
A policeman at each gate would suffice. And hey, take their crooked ball caps off and hold them until they exit the game. Now ain't that simple ?

those kids will never change, no matter what clothes they wear. Enforce school uniforms...everyone is the same no matter how rich, poor, race
