Atlanta bus driver suspended for leading passengers in prayer

ATLANTA — An Atlanta city bus driver has been suspended for five days after passengers said he insisted they hold hands as he led them in prayer.

MARTA spokesman Lyle V. Harris told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that LeRoy Matthews' behavior during the Tuesday incident violated MARTA policy.

According to a complaint filed with MARTA, when a passenger approached the front of the bus when it stopped around 7:30 p.m., Matthews stood and asked everyone to hold hands for a brief prayer. The complaint says the prayer lasted four to five minutes.

Harris says it is unclear what they prayed for or about and whether this has happened before. Matthews has worked for MARTA for six years.

Wow, can't beleive that it is against the law to have prayer but not against the law for citizen to have to listen to the vulgar and profane comments that people make. What has our world come to?

I wouldn't want a bus driver insisting I hold hands with strangers and saying prayers, either. Why would anyone think that's ok?

What this driver does on his own time is his business....He was being paid to drive a bus and obviously he was not doing so. As a Christian I have no problem with public or private prayer, but is should be "will you" and not "you will" pray. Also with the spread of H1N1 flu virus now I can't believe ANYBODY would hold hands with a stranger on a bus........Of course on the other hand, I've seen how the MARTA drivers drive and EVERY passenger should be praying the whole trip.

I have a feeling that his supporters would be singing a different song if he insisted that his passengers pray an islamic prayer with him.
