CONWAY, S.C. - A South Carolina man caught on video having sex with a horse was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison after pleading guilty for the second time in two years to abusing the creature.
Rodell Vereen was also ordered never to go near the stable where the horse's owner caught him and held him for authorities at shotgun point over the summer. He apologized to the woman and to himself after admitting to buggery at the Horry County courthouse.
"I'm sorry about what I've done. I didn't mean to do it. It's my fault. I'm sorry for what I've done to myself," Vereen said during Wednesday's court hearing.
Vereen was arrested in July after Barbara Kenley caught him entering the barn at Lazy B Stables in Longs, about 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach. She had been staking out the stable for more than a week after setting up a surveillance camera and videotaping Vereen's assault on her 21-year-old horse named Sugar.
Kenley said she became suspicious because her horse was acting strange and getting infections, and she noticed things were moved around the barn and dirt was piled up near the horse's stall.
It wasn't the first time she'd caught Vereen. In late 2007, Kenley found him asleep in the hay after assaulting her horse. For that offense, he also pleaded guilty to buggery, received probation and had to register as a sex offender.
On Wednesday, the judge sentenced Vereen to five years in prison, but he will only have to serve three years behind bars as long as he successfully completes two years of probation. Vereen also was ordered to undergo additional mental treatment after he gets out of prison and was told to stay away from Kenley's stable.
Kenley told The Sun News of Myrtle Beach she was mostly happy with the verdict, but wished Vereen had got more prison time.
"I've been through hell for the last year and it's caused a lot of hardship," Kenley told the newspaper. "There's a lot of ridicule and jokes going around about this thing. And a person can only take so much."

that is so gross..
Who are we to define love?
LOL, robbie! Very nice.
He needs to get his head examined that is just so nasty.
That's funny, I don't care who you are.
When this story broke, I laughed until I cried at some of the posts that were left on here. The act itself is disgusting but the posts left by readers were hilarious!
This is truely sick. Was this man Mexican and confused this poor horse for a donkey? Everyone knows what they do in Mexico.
This is a case I would refer to as having a totally ambiguous perspective of. It in no way influences my world, beyond providing a little perverse humor.
he should buy the horse and move to california and marry it.
Why is this mentally ill person going to prison instead of an insane asylum?
How do the horse and he perform oral activities on each other?
Neigh means neigh.
that is so funny, Robbie!! At some point in our future that question will be asked without jest. I dred the day.
As usual this left wing publication can't take the truth.
So Rodell Vereen walks into the courtroom and the judge says, "Why such a long face".
All of you are sick as this guy with your comments. If someone did this to your animal, guess you would be totally fine with it. And your mentality is that it's totally fine to do, stay far away from any animals, and if you own any? They need to be taken away asap. Sicko's.
I feel awful for the woman, the amount of money having to be spent to get the horse healthy again had to have been astronomical.
A crass deed but three years in prison seems excessive punishment. How much do you think it's going to cost to incarcerate this non violent person for three years. I'd guess a small bundle. Would society be better served by just probation and some community work?
ah pommom, their just horsing around.
Pommom, are you seriously equating people who are snickering at the bizarre behavior described in this story to being just like the one who got caught doing the buggering? People are bemused and scratching their heads over what that man did and are not taking notes on how to go about seducing a horse or any other animal for that matter. You came to a very strange conclusion as to others motives regarding this story and it makes me wonder what causes you to think that way?

When he's out of prison, Vereen will move to Vermont and petition the courts and legislature to legalize his activities. They eventually might agree to do so, and Ben and Jerry's would have a field day with that possibility.
By the comments left rolling, I don't put anything past there minds. Scratching there heads and snickering about the crime is beyond comprehension to me. I came to no conclusions, I stated what there *joking* self's behave like.
I think nothing about this sick man's behaviour should be joked about. That is just my opinion, as other's state theres.
Spring, what would that solve? This is clearly a very sick man who does not belong in society less he gets some serious help! Whose money do you think they would spend to make sure he stays away from animals, or god forbid, graduates to doing it with children, raping innocent people? He might get some help now. On the streets is NOT where people want him.
When he gets to prison, the inmates will be singing a special shout-out to him. "Save a horse, ride a cowboy". And pommom, it is a terrible mistake to think that "if you are a sexual deviate, no one is safe." Each one has their own pathology and behavior. Wanting to have sex with an animal has no connection between wanting to have sex with a child.
Pommom you DID come to a conclusion that the people making the jokes would be fine with the idea if someone would do the same thing to their pet. That those people ought to have their pets removed. You said it this way, "If someone did this to your animal, guess you would be totally fine with it. And your mentality is that it's totally fine to do, stay far away from any animals, and if you own any? They need to be taken away asap.".... By these words you accuse the jokers on here as being as perverted as the man who actually did the crime. The strangeness of this situation is what is bringing out the the jokes. Joking about the matter does in no way imply that people are in agreement with what this man did and it is quite a stretch to have connected the two ideas together. You are correct that people have a right to their own opinions....no matter how absurd.
Whatever rolling eyes, you would argue with a dang brick wall.. My thoughts remain the same and will always when reading such absurd comments to a story.
Funny,... just now I feel like I AM arguing with a brick wall! ;-)
There's mare to this story than meets the eye.
All in favor say " I " ..... Those opposed say " nnnnaaaayyyy " !!!
Rolling. I can see where pom is coming from. Some folks love their animals like their own children. If this was done to your grandchild, would you think it humorous for folks to come on this board making jokes?? I hope not. Thus, making jokes about this animal getting abused is cruel as well. What about this do YOU not understand? Makes one wonder about YOU when you defend these posters making light of animal cruelty. BTW, even if folks don't love animals that much..this is no place to find humor.
