Matt Aitken will be in a runoff with William Fennoy for the District 1 Augusta Commission seat.

In something of a surprise, Mr. Aitken received the most votes in the overwhelmingly black district. He received 40.19 percent (928) of the vote compared to 32.39 percent (748) of the vote for William Fennoy. Butch Palmer got 18.62 percent, followed by JoRae Jenkins at 8.75 percent.

Mr. Aitken finished first in a district that’s 65 percent black and hasn’t had a white representative in the 14 years since city-county consolidation.

The runoff will be held Dec. 1.
