District 1 candidate Bill Fennoy takes a phone call after finding out he will be in a run off with Matt Aitken.

In something of a surprise, Mr. Aitken received the most votes in the overwhelmingly black district. He received 40.19 percent (928) of the vote compared to 32.39 percent (748) of the vote for William Fennoy. Butch Palmer got 18.62 percent, followed by JoRae Jenkins at 8.75 percent.

Mr. Aitken finished first in a district that’s 65 percent black and hasn’t had a white representative in the 14 years since city-county consolidation.

The runoff will be held Dec. 1.

What is the criteria (percentage) required to not have a run-off?

apex24

Someone has have to have 51% to avoid a run-off.

slider3

To win outright, you need 50% plus 1 vote.

faithson

Go Matt... now is the time for Butch to throw his support to Matt... I hope he comes out for Matt ASAP...

Taylor B

If Butch throws his support to Matt, I'd be surprised. Fennoy actually has a much closer platform.

grrrrrrrrrrrr fed up

proud to say we know matt from church
go matt

jasonpilgrim

Matt is a great guy I met him his wife and little girl a few months ago. Seems like an awsome person to help lead our city forward.

Kramer

50% + 1 vote wins.
That is the law.

Emerydan

Fennoy seems more supportive of the CNPO.. I'll vote for him, but will hold my nose. Matt Aitken and the good ole boys are more a threat to our pocket book than Fennoy. With Aitken's vote.. Billy Morris would be given every sweet heart deal he wanted. There needs to be a check on the good-ole-boys

andrew412

if my math is correct, only 2309 people voted in district 1... it sounds very low... does anyone have the data for how many voters there are?

old man river

Dang...sorry Butch. At least you tried. All for Aitken now. ANything but Fennoy....

CorporalGripweed

What will happen now? Matt Aitken is the "power brokers" candidate. Which means he's probably a sock puppet for the money in this town. But if he wins, it upsets the so-called "racial balance" (which is so narrow minded, but exists nonetheless). And Mr Fennoy is more in tune with the CNPO but will probably continue the racial parity, and therefore the continued "do-nothing" attitude of this Commission. The only issue at hand is, who will Mr. Palmer and his passionate followers support. This will sway the election.

marie21

Matt Aitken in no a "sock puppet". He is honest and will vote from conviction and what is best for this city.

CorporalGripweed

One can only hope.

I'll vote for Aitkin, again... and hopefully can convince a few of my fellow constituents t do the same..

omnomnom

this is gonna be like choosing between McDonald's and Krystals. Neither appeal to me.

Emerydan

The thing about Aitken is that he will make sure the TEE center is rammed through.. whether the ppl still want it or not. With fennoy.. you pretty much will get what we have already had.. stalemate.. but in some cases that may not be such a bad thing.. esp when it comes to the TEE Center Monstrosity. Aitken is more dangerous to our pocketbook than Fennoy. But fennoy is not appealing.. This may be one to simply sit out.. but Billy Morris is just salivating about how much your tax money he may be able to get his hands on if he manages to get Aitken in office. That may just be enough for me to hold my nose and vote for Fennoy.. if Fennoy comes out and supports the CNPO outright then I might could feel a little better voting for him.. but still would have to keep myself from puking.. Aitken, from all of his answers on the questions regarding the CNPO seems to still be against it. That was Butch's big issue.. and tyhe big issue for many of the Harrisburgers. I can not see them supporting a candidate who will not support the CNPO.

FedupwithAUG

I got my butt out to vote against Butch.

omnomnom

emery, I really don't like the connection between Fennoy and Charles Walker. if that wasn't an issue I, like you, would hold my nose and vote for him.

Emerydan

I know what you mean.. but I am equally troubled by the connections with Aitken.. best to just sit this one out I suppose. I generally cannot bring myself to vote for lesser of two evils.

omnomnom

write-in campaign, anyone? hahaha

Emerydan

omnomnom... I think that's the ticket... I hate not to vote but cannot vote for either of these two.. so I will write in Butch.

Clay Boardman and Billy Morris put Aitkin in place. This was carefully planned and the stupid country club hills crowd went for it. They are gullible when it comes to "keeping up with the Jones" Ghetto criminals will find their way to Country Club Hills along with a few foreclosures and then the ugly decline will give them blight. In the coming year you will see more and more houses on the market in Country Club Hills. Many of the residents are elderly and their life spans are almost complete. This will put more houses on the market. Fear of buying in Augusta will keep CC property values down and the caliber of buyers will become poorer. The criminal element surrounding Country Club hills is sophisticated. They will stay a step ahead of the intrusion detection systems. Many criminals sell intrusion detection systems. The criminals who were imported to Augusta by some of the same non profit board members who reside in CC Hills will add irony. The prisoners that Atkins "saves" may turn up in the woods surrounding CC Hills. Irony. Some call it "Gods will" others will call it Karma. I call it stupidity. Junior League wana bees.

Emerydan

If Fennoy supports the CNPO then I may be able to support him.. blight and crime are the biggest issues.. Aitken seems more interested in carrying the water for the power-brokers in Augusta, and he has not been supportive of the CNPO thus far.. maybe because many of the slumlords that Butch and Lori have been fighting backed his campaign and donated money. I am no Fan of fennoy, but if he is for the CNPO and supports allowing the voters decide TEE, then I think I could support him.

eachoneteachone

There was some mighty big money involved with this race. I wonder if anyone is going to come forward and talk. Homeless people who live under bridges vote. They are very vulnerable to accepting money for their votes too.

Rewrite the Charter...elect a Mayor with a backbone and Watch Augusta GROW! As it is now it's the SOS just a different day.

Taylor B

eachone, are you saying there is fraud involved?

marie21

Some of you don't know who Matt Aitken is. He is an honorable man. He is not a country club guy. He can't help who contributes to his campaign. He will not be a yes man. I can understand why people are worried about the person who gets this job because a lot of the ones we have right now get nothing done. But I urge you to give Matt Aitken a chance. You will not be disappointed.

ispy4u

I guess that some of you Naysayers that claim Blacks only vote for other Blacks can now shut their ignorant mouths. Not that it is any of you all business. I also voted for him and will vote again in the runoff.
