Florida suspends star LB for eye-gouging incident

  • Follow Latest News

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida coach Urban Meyer has suspended Brandon Spikes for the first half of Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt after the star linebacker attempted to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in a 41-17 victory.

Meyer says Spikes was retaliating after getting his eye poked earlier in the game.

Spikes is fourth on the team with 42 tackles and has three sacks.

He decided to return for his senior season instead of entering the NFL draft. The team’s defensive captain has missed most of two games this season with an injured groin. He played only a series against Arkansas and sat out the entire game at Mississippi State on Oct. 24.

I wish he could have got to the eyes of Cox!! He would then have a excuse for playing bad.

Wow Bobo, it's not Cox's

Wow Bobo, it's not Cox's fault that Georgia can't afford the caliber of players that Florida can.

I would like to offer a public apology to "JustMyOpinion" and the other UGA fans for my comments over the past 2 days regarding this incident. I will man up and eat the crow. While I never defended Spikes' actions at any time, I hope that Coach Meyer's action has in some way helped to atone for our co-captain's unsportsmanlike conduct. On behalf of the Gator Nation, please accept our regrets.

Spikes was retaliating after getting his eye poked earlier in the game. The only problem was Georgia wasnt caught! What Spikes did was not only wrong but goes against what this team stands for. The bulldogs lost because they played poorly. Now can the Gators have the Championship?

Thanks for that SayNoMore.

Thanks for that SayNoMore. And nofrills, retaliation is not an excuse. I don't think any Georgia fan would say that the Georgia players have never done anything along those lines. The issue was that particular play and that particular act, NOT the outcome of the game. 2 different issues. In this day and age of YouTube, just about everything is viewable and recorded. Spikes just got caught, that's all. Anyway, the season goes on....

that's very admirable,

that's very admirable, saynomore. i think watching the players come together after a game, displaying sportsmanship, is one of the highlights of the whole game. no matter how gut-wrenching a game can be, not that this one was, watching the ones who actually laid it all on the line, come together, and congratulate each other on their efforts kind of makes me, as a fan, put it all in proper perspective. sportsmanship issues need to be addressed. their's a lot more of us that would rather see this, than a fight, or just poor sportsmanship in general.

SPIKES is a thug. He will

SPIKES is a thug. He will soon be a millionaire & my money is on that behavior continuing. Cant help himself...comes out every time... Ever notice how character (or lack there of) ALWAYS SURFACES...ALWAYS... GEORGIA has it share of THUGS on it's team also. A thug is a thug no matter what color he is or what jersey he wears... WINNING AT ALL COSTS is a function of the fans support of a particular program. this has led to MOST TOP 40 OR SO division 1 schools bringing in these ill mannered crude acting, usually embarrassingly ignorant, rather disgusting human beings to play football. They FILL A SPOT IN classes & apply just enough effort not to be suspended..Until they skip off to the NFL or other professional football team around the world. Meyer has been made to look like some sort of upstanding charactered man mainly due to the fact that his great man (both on and off the field) QB has given him CHARACTER creditability The truth is Meyer is to be credited for coaching SUPERIOR athletes to championships AND to be blamed for their highly aberrant behavior. If it were not for Tebow & a couple of other fine gentlemanly examples this spikes character & his ilk would rule...
