A 112-year-old Hickman Road home listed among Augustas most endangered historic properties will be renovated by investors who recently acquired the property, according to Historic Augusta, Inc.
Hallock Cottage, located in Augustas Summerville District, was purchased by Paul King and South Carolina investor Don Boynton. Rehabilitation of the one story Queen Anne cottage will include a façade restoration, structural repairs and restoration of a cottage at the rear of the property. The objective will be to return the cottage from multi-family to its original use as an owner-occupied, single-family dwelling.
Hallock Cottage was built in 1897 by Elijah Allen Hallock, a civil engineer from Moriches, New York, who relocated to Augusta in an effort to ease the symptoms of tuberculosis. He lived in the home only three years until his death in 1900. Later owners of the home include: August F. Hilleke, who managed Augustas gas works; Hollis C. Boardman, manager of the Standard Oil Company in Augusta; Annabel Craig Eve; and Marion G. Ridgely, among others.
Historic Augustas endangered property program is designed to raise awareness within the community of the value and significance of each of the structures or groups of related structures on the list and to identify the tools available to protect and preserve them.
