Crews plan to reopen the Fifth Street Bridge today after six months of construction on the U.S. Highway 1 interchange in North Augusta.

Jeff Terry, of the South Carolina Department of Transportation, said there is still a small amount of work to do on the project but they are planning to have the ramps and bridge open today.

“It’s depending on a couple of subcontractors coming from out of town,” Mr. Terry said.

On and off ramps were added to the interchange to allow drivers to travel between Augusta and Aiken County on the bridge.

Currently drivers can go north on U.S. 1 into Aiken County only if they merge from the Fifth Street Bridge access.

During the construction, drivers will be able to use the bridge from Reynolds Street but not via U.S. 1 in North Augusta. Crews also widened the interchange bridge to allow for new acceleration lanes, he said.
