EDGEFIELD An Edgefield man was killed this morning when the small Ford truck he was driving was crushed by a tractor trailer container unit.
The unit had been knocked astride when the tractor trailer carrying the container collided with an old train trestle entering Edgefield.
Officials said 27-year-old Jeremy Jay of Church Street in Edgefield was killed instantly. It is the second fatality on Edgefield County roads this year. The tractor trailer was reportedly carrying parts for the Superload generator now moving through Greenwood County.
About two to three tractor trailers strike the 13-foot-tall trestle each year as they carry loads taller than the trestle.
The collisions rarely result in fatalities, though.
The crash happened about 7 a.m. and wreckage was still being removed from the scene more than two hours later. A crane unit from Augusta was called in to help remove the container.
I cannot believe the stupidity of some "professional" drivers. EVERYONE knows you cannot drive a big truck thru Edgefield because of that overpass. My sympathies to the family of the fallen.
How very sad, don't they have the height marked on the testle? I pray for his family, very tragic and could have been avoided.
As a professional driver, drivers please check your route and read the signs, this was wayyyyyyyy too easy to prevent.
There are signs posted BEFORE the truck bypass on both sides of town warning truckers of the low clearance and to use the bypass. What a freaking idiot! (the driver, not you, 5.00)
Truckers depending on GPS units for direction. Happens everyday nationwide. The unapproved GPS units are for cars not for commercial trucking . Sending truckers on unauthorized routs for trucks.
It requires not a GPS to read a simple sign and adjust accordingly.
this is so sad.
Truckers MUST know the heights of the loads they are carrying BEFORE reaching a trestle with a limited height. Unfortunately the deceased had no chance against this tragic event although it can hardly be called an accident when a driver tried to drive under a trestle that was too low for his container. I'm sure he will face charges, fines, might even lose his right to drive again but that won't bring back an innocent young man who was only driving by. God rest his soul and give his family peace. Never did he dream when he woke up today and started on his route that he would never make it to his destination - hopefully though his final destination was heaven.
This is terribly sad. My thoughts and prayers are with this young mans family.
Those guys moving the super generator are Canadian drunkards. What do you expect.
Where was his pilot car at? Eating twinkies somwhwere?
Where was his pilot car at? Eating twinkies somwhwere?
If it was a regular 18 wheeler there is no escort. My question is why wasn't he on the truck route?
R.I.P Jeremy. You couldn't find a nicer guy who was always willing to help you out. Hopefully the truck driver will be held responsible for his negligence. He never should have been driving in downtown Edgefield. It is nobody's fault but his--Jeremy was just on his way to work minding his own business. Y'all please keep his wife and family in your prayers.
They definately are stonewall:)
What an absolute and needless tragedy this is. No offense to you roadkill, but do truckers not care? This isn't the first time a truck has tried to travel where they aren't supposed to. Such a sad story.
Please, please pray for this dear family. Jeremy leaves a young wife, Allyson, a sister, parents and grandparents. He and Allyson are in the process of building a home...they have hopes and dreams that now will never happen. Such a tragedy.
My prayers to the family............
My deepest sympathy to the family. I really do not know what to say about these ignorant truckers who do this. they should know how tall thier load is and the signs tell them how high or low the bridge/trestles are. It's not an accident, its a careless act of someone to lazy to do the right thing and check as they are instructed or go around when they need to and it cost someone their life. He should never be allowed to drive again.. period! He is not responsible enough. What will it take to get through to these idiots?
pommom. most truckers do care and make every attempt at safe operations. Just as with any other line of work there are a few who don't. They are the ones that give us all a bad name, same as other industries. Permit me to brag just a little, but I have over 1 million accident free miles. There are many of us who do and we want the bad ones off the road as much as anyone else. And no, I did not take it personally.
TakeAstand, if you see a driver driving unsafely or doing something stupid, report them. Most trucks will have a phone number somewhere. If there is not a phone number, look for the DOT number on the side of the cab. You can use that to determine who owns that particular truck. Also, all trucks will have a unit specific truck number on them.
Good!! Was not throwing you in that comment, know you are a driver. I've ridden in the big trucks and loved it, and saw how idiotic car driver's can act around the big rigs. Also saw a fair share of trucker's that acted carelessly.
I applaud you and those other's that actually respect the road and those massive trucks they are in control of.
Oh, believe me RoadKill, I have reported many of them! lol Dangerous drivers, drunk drivers, anything to save a life from these fools out here driving.
fyi...this occurs and average of too times a week, not a year. it was an absolute freak accident. my heart goes out to the family of the victim but also to the driver of this rig. he is a normal individual doing his job as many of us got up to do this morning. this driver was still parked at 4 this afternoon. he was not assisted at all by the ones hired to protect and serve. everyone has a job to do and everyone makes mistakes just some of us are fortunate to be blessed that our mistakes do not turn out with a fatality. my point.....do not kick a man that is definetly down. he was a very respectable driver wHo missed a sign. and as stated before it happens every week. NOT YEARLY... prayers to the jay family and god speed to the trucker that has to travel 1000 miles with what happened today in his heart. if you do not know the circumstances OR THE INDIVIDUAL do not be so fast to judge.
tickedoff, this was no freak accident. There are easily visible signs going into Edgefield stating the height of the bridge. There is also a very well marked truck route. If the driver had taken the time to properly plan his route, he would have know about the bridge. Also the bridge itself has a sign with letters large enough to be read from a safe stopping distance. No reason for it to have happened.
tickedoff. Sit back and take your head out of were you sit and rethink about your post. I cant think that you are that dumb.
Some drivers just don't care. I watched a driver ignore all the signs about overhead clearance and got stuck. It took a special tow-truck over two hours to remove the tractor trailer; damages to both the structure and the trailer--and the company was angry because they had to pay for the damages. Go figure. Sincere condolences to the young man's family.
If you ever drive I-26 west look at the bridges. Chunks of conrete taken out with exposed rusted rebar.
He was possibly still *sitting* there hours later, (if you actually saw him in the truck) because the company didn't want him driving there truck anymore. This happens on average twice a week? Yet in your opinion, this was a freak accident.. Yea, ok.. Am sure you would be sooo understanding and say the same if it were your spouse or loved one killed by a driver's pure carelessness.
If you honestly could say the same had it been your husband/wife killed, then you have got to be the most forgiving person on the planet.
The truck driver was negligent and totally responsible for this needless death. period. end of story. Who but an idiot would think a GPS is 100% accurate and ignore sign after sign warning them of clearance issues. I worked at a place once where the idiot truck driver called me and asked which entrance to use to get to the store. I said the one your boss told you to use when you left for delivery. I was a substitute employee that day and told him I had never worked at this store before and could not give him any directions. The idiot hit 3 parked cars, took out a road sign, and some bricks in the wall of an adjacent office building because he did not bother to get accurate directions. The icing on the cake was he told the cops the girl in the store told me to turn down this ally. So yeah idiot driver's are not in short supply. My prayers are with the wife and parent's of this young man.
this is my last post concerning this matter...the bottom line is two lives and two families will for ever be impacted by this ...the driver was left stranded waiting to make is truck safe enought to attempt to make it Home to his family. if it is so visible why does it happen so often. do you think the trucker wants to rip the top of his rig off or take a life to drive through downtown edgefield....i think not. when you travel do you not ever make a wrong turn?? of course not accidents can not and do not happen to you. when i say freak accident i mean that a life was took. a 18 wheeler hadn't been long turned over with a box trailer, just pure fate no one was killed then. every week the trussel is hit, what happens to the pedistrain that happens to be walking over at that moment? i can bet you with my head up my ? or not, if it was my spouse or family member i would not be so cruel to disreguard the feelings of the driver.... AGAIN PRAYERS TO ALL INVOLVED. i have no more post to share, please enjoy your unaccidential life.
How much does it cost to increase the clearance of this overpass so that tractor trailers can get through? Is one life enough? Two? Three? We see way too many accidents that reslt from low overpasses. These CAN be averted.
