Mother of dog attack victim indicted

  • Follow Latest News

The mother of a 2-year-old boy who was found mauled by dogs on a neighbor's property last July has been indicted by a Richmond County grand jury.

Jessica Lynn Chavous, 24, of the 3600 block of Belair Road, was indicted Tuesday on one count of second-degree cruelty to children. She was charged for an alleged incidence of negligence in which her son, Damien Chavous, climbed a fence and was attacked by several dogs July 10.

What is the actual purpose of
Unpublished

What is the actual purpose of a "secret" grand jury? This process is completely suspect? What legal canons is it based on? In this day and age, one just can't believe anything done secretly. This process is unAmerican. Oh, and the indictment is a paper drill because something else is at work here...and it ain't justice.

JUSTUS4, I would really love

JUSTUS4, I would really love to hear more about this "SECRET" grand jury you mentioned. Please enlighten us all. Exactly what is the nature of your "complaint" in this case. It does not seem to apply here. A Mother was indicted due to sufficient evidence of negligence. Do you even know what a grand jury is, and, do you have any understanding of the judicial system? A grand jury is not secret because you are not involved in it. JUSTUS4, you are making a fool of yourself. When you open your mouth, you remove all doubt!

Aren't all grand jury

Aren't all grand jury proceedings secret to begin with? Its the only way to protect the reputations of people who aren't subsequently indicted. Who in their right mind-- apart from someone as obtuse as Justus, that is-- would want it any other way?

Yes, a grand jury is made up

Yes, a grand jury is made up of a select few, (never known by the public) and all cases are heard with any evidence to facilitate whether to hand down an indictment or not. Justus is blowing smoke as usual with his banter..
In this case, they did there service and i'm glad.

Pommom38, the quorum of a grand jury is not made up of anonymous people. It is easy to find out who is in each session by reading the presentments of the grand jury. The names of everyone on an inspection committee of the grand jury are on the reports. The deiliberations of a grand jury are unknown to the outside, including the judges and the DA.

Justus, again you seek to

Justus, again you seek to enlighten the masses with your self proclaimed prodigious knowledge, and as usual, you fall flat on your face. There is no Secret Grand Jury, there is only a group of citizens, in good standing, called upon to do their civic duty. They are presented with the facts of an incident that has been investigated by a law enforcement agency and the District Attorney's (DA) office. They then have to decide if there is enough evidence presented to precede to trial in a court of law. If so then they present a "True Bill" to the DA. If not they then present a "No Bill". Evidently in this case there was enough evidence presented to a group of citizens that led them to believe a trial is warrented. These citizens are to be applauded for accepting this role in the judicial system.

Justus, do us all a favor, until you know the facts and all the facts, Just keep your mouth shut. Oh and your fingers still.

It should have been a

It should have been a first-degree cruelty to children charge. You would think they would have a bigger fence put in with a two year old playing in the yard alone. Especially when the neighbor had as may as 15 dogs in the yard at one time. I hope she got her four dogs back.

I won't even leave my

I won't even leave my grandson in a room alone w/ my dog, just in case it might get stupid or the child might get too aggressive with the dog. My dog is an outside dog 99.9% of the time and children are absolutely never unattended. There are no absolutes in animals...I don't care what anyone says. And, if I'm using a dog for protection....it ain't doing me a lot of good if someone shoots the dog. Therefore, think I'll have a dog and a.......weapon?

It's been 14 weeks now since

It's been 14 weeks now since that night...the public is still led to believe that little boy climbed that fence while several adults inside did not hear him cry one time and only discovered him after being mauled....the truth of the matter is ...it was their jack russell,it's the only thing that makes sense...impossible for the child to climb that fence and impossible they didn't hear him screaming or the dogs barking. The entire family is concealing the truth..and while the child has recovered and in foster care,my life was destroyed and the lives of 4 dogs who did not do what they were accused of were killed by animal control. I was forced to surrender them after one month of begging them what else they needed from me and it cost me nearly $1700. THe public knows the truth is not being told and even Jessica is taking the fall when all she has to do is tell the truth and things would turn out completely different for her and her family is standing by and letting it happen. The sheriffs dept told me nor my dogs were being held responsible, but animal control was bound and determined to destroy me to avenge what they didn't even bother to investigate to proove my dogs did it.

I do have compassion for you

I do have compassion for you Jessica and I force myself everyday to try and understand why you all would blame my dogs for doing what Petey did. I understand the love a family has for their pets, but I nor them deserved what happened to us afterwards. I have tried to pray to forgive, but my heart is still so burdened down with the injustice and cruelty inflicted on innocent animals...I don't think I will ever get over this....the memory of it will last forever. I do hope that in the end....you will get your son back and that you will appreciate the fact that you can hold him in your arms again...my dogs were tore from me and killed and thrown away...how can I ever come to forgive my neighbors and community for the horror they inflicted on me.How do you think it makes me feel to see Petey running up and down the fence line as if nothing happened,it's a nightmare waiting to happen again.

Seems like there would have

Seems like there would have been evidence of where a 2 year old was 'mauled', to prove whether or not the incident happened in the child's yard or the neighbors. Don't worry Hearts, if you are correct in your assumption...What goes around, comes around...Sorry you've had to be the scapegoat for negligent parenting skills.
