An Emanuel County Sheriffs Deputy was injured Wednesday night when a truck driver ran over the deputys leg.
Deputy Daniel Moxley is undergoing surgery at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital for a compound fracture to his leg, according to an Emanuel County Sheriffs press release. He was also treated for a broken nose and cuts to his body.
Authorities are searching for the driver of the truck, identified as 45-year-old Patrick Kersey, of Adrian, who was last seen in his dark green Ford F-150 truck with a Schwabe Motors paper tag.
Deputy Moxley pulled over the suspect about 10 p.m. on South Main Street in Swainsboro after watching the vehicle fail to yield to right of way. Deputy Moxley was in the process of telling Mr. Kersey he was under arrest when the suspect jumped in his truck and attempted to flee.
A Georgia State Trooper and another passenger in the suspects truck witnessed the incident, the release said. The passenger, whose name was withheld by the sheriffs department, was also struck by the car and injured.
Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens said Deputy Moxley was an 11-year veteran of the department and a dedicated public servant, the press release said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Georgia State Patrol are investigating the incident.
Mr. Kersey is described as 5 feet, 10 inches in height and 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He lives in the Norristown Junction Community in Emanuel County.
