Richt: No plans to demote Martinez

  • Follow Latest News

ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia coach Mark Richt insists his longtime friendship with Willie Martinez hasn’t clouded his ability to assess the job performance of the Bulldogs’ embattled defensive coordinator.

Last week’s 45-19 loss at Tennessee marked the eighth time in 15 games that Georgia has allowed 37 or more points. Richt says he has no immediate plans to demote Martinez.

Richt told The Associated Press Tuesday that “whether a guy is your friend or not, they have taken on a certain responsibility ... where they know they can be criticized and they know they’ve got to do their job regardless of who the boss is.”

Entering this weekend’s game at Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs rank last in the Southeastern Conference allowing an average of 30.7 points.

Martinez HAS to be relieved

Martinez HAS to be relieved of the Def. Coordinator position. The boosters voice is louder than Coach Richt's. This defensive nosedive began last year!

Well, I've got 2 opinions on

Well, I've got 2 opinions on this...not that anyone really cares and not that it really means anything! First of all, Richt is NOT going to announce that he has any plans to fire Martinez at this point in the season...no way! That would be foolish, and Richt is no fool. I'm quite sure that Martinez's job, just like everyone else's job, will be reevaluated at season's end. Secondly, ONE of the problems that the defense has had this year (remember, I said ONE of the problems) is that the OFFENSE has given up the ball an average of just under 3 times per game. Several of those turnovers have occurred deep within Georgia territory and have resulted in opponent scores...at one point earlier in the season, it was around 70 points off of Georgia turnovers! Pretty hard to blame the defense on that! Richt knows that. One problem with the offense is the offensive line. I really don't think it's a new problem that started this year. Remember, we had Knowshon Moreno, who was able to find his own holes to get through, and pretty much made something out of nothing. What I'm saying is that the productivity of Moreno could've covered up for a sorry offensive line in those years.

Actually the lines, on both

Actually the lines, on both sides of the ball, were "suppose" to be strengths of The Bulldogs this year. Players were hurt last year who were suppose to return.

Why is nobody questioning

Why is nobody questioning Richt's abilities? Just because he is a pretty face doesn't mean he shouldn't be held accountable. He is likable, however, he squanders one of the best recruiting classes year after year. Any other business would go to the top and work down. For some reason this process is working here in reverse. It took the Braves 5 years to figure it out with Cox, how long will the Dawgs wait.

i agree with just my opinion.

i agree with just my opinion. with the exception of the zone being too weak, giving up waaaayyyyy to many yards passing to mediocre qb's. they don't do bad against the run, and are getting some pressure on the qb's. the running game is killing them. they can't control game tempo without it. turnovers, and penalties finish them off. i hope they hunker down, and save these coaches jobs. i beleive they'll (the coaches) get better with time. they're learning, too! besides, if they fire martinez, in a few years, they can get kirby smart once alabamas whole staff gets fired for the ncaa violations that always seem to follow successs there. right, builderman1? you know what i'm saying? you remember? all those many years on probation? alabama football is as crooked as a question mark!

I suppose 6 10 win seasons in

I suppose 6 10 win seasons in the last 7 years should earn a little "benefit of the doubt" type logic. Every once in a while things don't go your way and you start losing to teams like ga.tech. Normalcy will return soon.
