Ga. boy killed hunting

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — An 11-year-old boy is dead after he accidentally shot himself in the head during a hunting trip in north Georgia.

Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that John Wayne Corcoran died Friday night at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. He said the shooting was just before 6 p.m. Friday in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

The firearm season for hunters begins next Saturday in Georgia, but state officials say Friday was a special adult-child hunt where children under 18 can hunt with an adult.

and what was the goal? deer meet? good job dad...hunting accidents are the worst because mosy dont even need the meat.

we oulaw dog fighting and chicken fighting but a sport that kills people isnt???

Someones ignorance is showing!

superdawg

that is true..the dad should be charged!

Daphne

superdawg... This dad feels bad enough without your nasty comments. Hunting is a way for dads and thier kids to be together and learn about nature and firearms. You'll find that most kids raised up hunting have a respect for nature & firearms. Most of these kids stay out of trouble, too busy hunting...Hunting has been around for ever and yes most hunters I know eat what they kill. This was a awful accident.
My prayers are with this family...

thistownisunbelievable

Excellent comment Daphne. You described my childhood perfectly.

superdawg

more than 1000 people are killed yearly hunting....and the are called accidents. more like negligence.

freespeech

superdawg, what should the dad be charged with? Spending time with his child? It was an accident you idiot.

superdawg

you give a child a loaded weapon and call it an accident? the only way to spend time with a kid is to go hunting? you can not justify this action.

thistownisunbelievable

Cite some authority for that stat you just pulled out, super. Otherwise, quit using a tragedy to advance an agenda.

Grasshopper

Superdawg.... if that statement is correct, check and see how many fell out of deer stands. In 2000 600 people died from unintentional injuries do to guns. Notice more people died from falling, unintentional poisoning, drownings etc... You have a knee jerk reaction, because of your political beliefs. http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcgvacci.html

mad_max

More people are killed talking on cell phones while driving. We should outlaw cell phones AND cars. Accidents can happen during any activity. Kids are killed on playgrounds all the time. This was a terrible tragedy and I am sure the father will carry this with him forever. But kids die in car wrecks every day and no one is hollering about banning driving or outlawing cars. This story is about a TRAGEDY, not an ISSUE.

superdawg

what is my agenda? I am just saying that someone needs to be held responsible in this tradgic death.

thistownisunbelievable

Do you attack parents of children who are accidentally killed while riding bikes, climbing trees, riding in cars, etc? This is an awful tragedy--as has been pointed out, the adult that was presumably with the child will bear the burden for the rest of his life. Maybe it will come out that he was wreckless or somehow failed to properly supervise the child, but the mere fact that he was hunting with the child does not give rise to an automatic conclusion that the adult was somehow negligent. If you think it does, THAT means you have an agenda.

My repost from yesterday. Don't you realize that the grandfather died with his grandson. The tragedy of this unfortunate death will live forever and destroy the life's of all that are involved. That grandfather loved that son more than you will ever know. 11 years olds are not too young to hunt when they have been properly shown how to respect and fire a weapon. My five sons was shooting 22's to 7mm Remington magnum since they were 10 and 11, and my 4 grandsons are also will trained on the use of a weapon. A gun has never killed anybody until it is in the hands of a human, mostly by a human that has intentions to kill. I feel so sorry for this grandfather and family that I can say no words to express my feelings. I Love this grandfather taking him hunting. If many other grandfathers and fathers did the same instead of having a child see booze, drugs, wild parties, wife beating and taught how to hate the world, there would be a hell of a lot less deaths that we read about daily. I have complete feelings for the family. Kiss my A## pommon38 and justus4!

CobaltGeorge

supedawg you are added to my last sentence.

superdawg

Well George it shows your intelligence level when you have to blot out words. The fact that you hunt is assinine. Do you need the food? Are you so poor that this is the only way for you and your family to eat? Need food? Plant a garden. You and your 5 sons can spend time together picking tomatoes. Hunting is a dangerous action (not a sport). Did you also let youe kids drive cars at 10? If a 10 year old drives a car and kill you scream about where are the parents and the parents would likely get charged even if they are in the car supervising the child. George ask yourself one question....why do you need to kill animals for pleasure then compare your answer with Jeffery Dailmer.

Posted by superdawg on Mon Oct 12, 2009 8:16 AM....About as stupid a comment as I have seen lately. I taught my son to shoot, gun safety, how to clean them and we enjoyed hunting deer (and eating it) until I physically was unable. He still hunts and is teaching his daughter the same skilsl I taught him. Were there no deer hunting, YOU (nor we) wouldn't have enough food as the deer would take over the farms. Ga. is already over populated as indicated by the number of car/deer wrecks Ga. and S.C. have. Far more are killed by deer/auto accidents:http://www.car-accidents.com/deer-car-auto-accidents.html

I do love making a bigger fool out of a fool with FACTS.

jack

superdawg, try these true stats and STFU and quit showing your ignorance:http://www3.sympatico.ca/d.rosen/accidentstats.htm

andywarhol

I wonder who would be able to feed themselves given a major catastrophic event? So what charges to we bring on the father? The GRANDFATHER was participating in a legal act with his grandson.

superdawg

stfu??

ColdBeerBoiledPeanuts

I think if there were not grocery stores superdawg would be in the soup line or at one of our houses trying to beg for some deer meat to eat. Typical Hypocrite, can't understand overpopulation, disease and the consequenses thereof. Only see's his view of the world though his waste evacuation orofice!

Roeschen

At least this man did something with his grandson instead of ignore him, as happens so often. He obviously loved the child very much. My thoughts are with this family.

jack

My prayers are with the family, especially the grand dad. I am a grand dad and can't imagine the anguish he is going through.

Grasshopper

The fact that you hunt is asinine.superdawg 10:49 AM. There is your political agenda.

The Big O

Hunting helpless animals with a high powered gun......yep that is a great sport. That really takes a lot of skill and ingenuity. Why not hunt somebody or something that can shoot back?

lynnsay22

stfu means shut the f*** up. And really....you need to. You are about as ignorant as they come. I agree with all the posters that are against you. Nothing left to say.

lynnsay22

Big O....if we did not hunt these animals, they would take over. It's called conservation. If we let these animals take over there would actually be more deaths via vehicle/deer accidents. It's amazing the people that are so ignorant about this process.

Grasshopper

All fishing and hunting related purchases have a federal duty tax. The tax is divided up and given to the states. People who hunt and fish are the ones footing the bill for conservation. Also include the fees paid in state hunting and fishing licenses.
