DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Authorities in Dawsonville say an 11-year-old boy died after a gun accidentally discharged while he was hunting with his grandfather.

Dawson County Sheriff's Department spokesman Johnny Holtzclaw said the shooting happened just before 6 p.m. Friday at the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

Holtzclaw said the boy died of injuries from a single gunshot wound late Friday at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.

Dawson County authorities did not immediately release the names of the boy or his grandfather.

I'm a grandparent and I have

I'm a grandparent and I have the deepest sympathy for another grandpa that's lost a grandson. The child's death is only one in a long list of needless injuries and deaths caused by firearms. I learned to use a firearm growing up on the farm but I wouldn't recommend gun ownership to my children nor grandchildren. I love activities with my grandson, but take your camera and leave them as you found them. You don't have to spill blood to have fun and enjoy the great outdoors. There's some ballyhoo about gun safety courses and they're probably as good as sex education courses. Neither accomplish much. There's a plaintive line in a folk song, " When will they ever learn? "

Hey wait a minute. Davy

Hey wait a minute. Davy Crockett may not really have killed a bear when he was only three, but his 5-year-old 10th great-grandson, Tre Merritt of Arkansas, sure killed full-grown bear. What we need isn't more gumment intervention to protect us from living our own lives. We need manly men--like this grandpa-- teaching their sons and grandsons how to be men of good judgment and action. Don't listen to wusses like Justus who are happy to roll over and let the gumment tell him what kind of man to be.

Warhol, I'm all for free

Warhol, I'm all for free speach. And I know I should just ignore people who leave hateful comments. Usually I do. But from experience, it is very hurtful to read comments like this left on an article about a loved one's death. As strange as it may seem, some people find comfort in reading about how sorry strangers are for their own loss. It's comforting to know people in your community care. When comments like the ones on this article are read, it just adds to the confusion and hurt already being felt.

I am just glad that this

I am just glad that this happened in Dawson County where most likely the family will never see the comments left on the Augusta Chronicle page. My heart goes out to them.
