SC golfer loses arm to alligator

  • Follow Latest News

BEAUFORT, S.C. — A 77-year-old man has lost his lower arm after he was bitten by an alligator on a coastal South Carolina golf course.

Multiple media outlets reported that the Fripp Island man was playing the Ocean Creek Golf Course about 3 p.m. Thursday when he was attacked. His name was not released.

Kate Hines with the Fripp Island Property Owners Association says the man was picking up his ball when a 10-foot alligator pulled him into a nearby pond.

The man's golf partners were able to free him. Workers from Tracks Wildlife Control in Beaufort killed the alligator and removed the man's arm.

He was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in hopes of reattaching his arm. His condition was unclear early today.

Since they already killed the Gator... I guess Happy Gilmore will not need to come back and kill it. I wonder if he will get a wooden hand? Seriously though... that had to be rather tragic. Hope he recovers quickly!

I played Old South in Hilton

I played Old South in Hilton head once...hit a great tee shot...went looking for the ball. It was abutting a gator sunning himself in the fairway...decided I didn't need that slazenger any more and took a drop....a long way from the gator....I have heard of people with balls close to the water being driven back by gators but this is the first I have heard of an attack......

Didn't a cast netter recently

Didn't a cast netter recently find an artificial arm in his net? Perhaps they can work out a deal? In all seriousness though, I hope that his real arm can be successfully reattached.

Like the guy knew an alligator was in the water waiting. Get real posters. And ya'll are just so cute with your stupid comments, then saying, *oh, in all seriousness though*.
I hope they're able to reattach the arm and he doesn't suffer anymore from this event.

Obviously there are ghouls

Obviously there are ghouls out there......and you can't counter stupid remarks with qualifiers "Oh, seriously....". Let's hope nothing of the sort happens to you in the future so you won't be the recipient of an unkind, foolish remark like the ones you have made. Hopefully, the man will recover in good health.

First thing I thought of when

First thing I thought of when I saw this story was "Happy Gilmore!" But I'm glad the man is alright, and he only lost his hand. Leaning down like that to get his ball, he could've just as easily lost his head!

My prayers go out to this man and his family. The people on here making fun are just weird. This experience will leave him as harmed mentally as physically. A 6 month follow up piece would be nice.....

actually golfers have a sense

actually golfers have a sense of humor unique unto ourselves. We tell jokes about dragging heart attack victims from hole to hole...showing reverence as a hearse bearing our wives passes the 9th green. and burying loved ones on the course so we can visit them 5 times a week. Please forgive us if we seem insensitive I assure you it isn't the case. I did take a club lenght john....a club house length....

That was very respectful of you irish, to explain the golfer's sense of humor. I doubt the guy is feeling anything funny right now, but maybe later on he will make something funny up about his *close call*.

the gators want their land

the gators want their land back. they're tired of rich men in funny looking clothes driving stupid little cars, cluttering up their ponds with balls and telling bad jokes within their hearing. this may be some type of reaction from all the chemicals from the pampered and coddled golf grass that runs off into their drinking water.

I recently stayed at a resort

I recently stayed at a resort in Hilton Head,SC. They had a community pond with signs "Dont Feed The Alligator" and a playground not even 100 feet away!!! We watched the uncaged alligator swim and get out the water to enjoy the sun from our "3rd floor" balcony while others sat around the pond. Huh???

There sure are some uptight

There sure are some uptight people here standing on their holier than thou stumps. I'll bet that if we started looking through all their posts we'd find that most if not all have cast a barb or made a joke that could be considered in poor taste. One in particular I've seen making uncalled for and insulting remarks to others and yet here she is chastising another poster who made small joke. What a hypocrite. Now with that said, I'm glad that the man wasn't killed and that he recovers fully.

back to story: you know what

back to story: you know what they say: ---- 'em if they can't take a joke! hey, we can't help what the paper prints, right? they leave it wide open sometimes so that one can hardly help poking a bit of fun now and again. however, if you've noted, it's not politically correct to have a sense of humor in this country anymore; that is, unless you're the liberal left and you're making fun of the conservative right, then it's perfectly okay.
