The race to replace Betty Beard on the Augusta Commission got a little less crowded Wednesday.

District 1 candidate Anthony Jones filed a notarized affidavit withdrawing from the race, citing “personal issues.” Richmond County Board of Elections Executive Director Lynn Bailey said it’s too late to remove his name from paper and electronic ballots, but notices will be put in mail-out ballots and posted at polling sites informing voters that Mr. Jones bowed out and any votes cast for him will be null and void and won’t be counted.

An unemployed former health care worker, Mr. Jones, 35, rents a house owned by fellow District 1 candidate James “Butch” Palmer and located on the same block as Mr. Palmer’s residence in Harrisburg. Since qualifying to run, Mr. Jones had done very little campaigning, failing to respond to numerous news media inquires, not appearing at Tuesday’s Augusta-Richmond County Committee for Good Government candidate forum and garnering no campaign contributions, according to paperwork he filed with the Board of Elections.

The other remaining candidates in the race are Matt Aitken, Bill Fennoy, JoRae Jenkins.

Butch, was trying to split

Butch, was trying to split the black vote but this guy was so useless he couldn't even help with that.

It's pretty obvious now isn't

It's pretty obvious now isn't it? I wonder which face palmer used to convince Jones to run? palmer on commission would be just another show at the circus. This isn't about race. It's about stats.

Palmer must be a threat to

Palmer must be a threat to crime in the area to be getting such vicious anonymous attacks. Also, isn't it rather prejudiced to think all people of one race are going to vote one particular way and all people of all other races are going to vote any particular way? Some people can think for themselves.

If we want to go down this

If we want to go down this road then let's ask who put Jo rae jenkins up to run. Remember, she also filed on the last day. She has a DDA friendly platform similar to Aitkens, as well as Aitkens, she also has connections to the DDA. Being a black woman she could get a fair number of votes to siphon away from fennoy, but has little chance of winning. She does not appear to be well financed or have high name recognition. Maybe someone should call Ed Presnell over at the Aitkens campaign about their connections to Ms Jenkins.

Maybe Ms.Jenkins doesn't know

Maybe Ms.Jenkins doesn't know what she is doing. But has a great platform.Someone get a hold of her and tell her to contact Ms.Helen Adams to see if she can give her some pointers on running a clean campane. We really need New Faces and new ideals. So lets help her out.

emerydan, you are probably

emerydan, you are probably right. I went to high school with JoRae didn't know her at all really. But, it is weird given here background that she runs for city council. I would have thought someone with economic development or leadership background would be a more likely candidate.

I think any good candidate

I think any good candidate who campaigns hard enough can win this without trying to split the vote. But all of this about who put someone up to run is pure speculation.. but if you are going to ask it about Jones, then I think it should be asked about Jenkins. I just find it interesting that she also supports the TEE Center and most of the DDA agenda just like Aitken, and her filing on the very last day well raises a few flags. But she and Jones could have just been newcomers who wanted to get involved. But the fact that Jenkins supports the TEE Center at the Marriott location probably won't win her many votes in the black community. I just don't see that being a popular position among many black voters in Augusta.

So much of your time is being

So much of your time is being spent on the speculation of who put whom up to the task of running, when will YOU focus on the issues. I know Jo'Rae Jenkins personally. She threw her hat in the race on the last day because she had to prepare for the foolishness that comes along with running for a political office. If YOU are not a part of the solution, then you are part of the problem! Where do you stand on the issues? Only 8% of voters turned out this summer to vote on the tax issues. Ms Jenkins is choosing people over politics. She has been active in this community helping others and has chosen to help get us out of the shambles our government is in. What are you doing?

And, Emerydan... there is no

And, Emerydan... there is no affiliation with the Aitken team. Jo'Rae Jenkins is a woman who loves this city as many young people do. She has decided to do something about what is going on in Augusta instead of sitting back shaking her head saying, "tsk... tsk... what a pitty!". Step from behind your computer and come to a forum to meet these candidates to talk about solutions to the things you think are wrong.

Well from I gather from what

Well from I gather from what I have heard from the various candidates is that both Aitken and Jenkins support the current TEE proposal. Palmer says the current proposal is too expensive and has corruption hanging over it. He wants the voters to be allowed to decide this new proposal. Fennoy seems to also be against this current Tee center proposal. So I guess that leaves Palmer and fennoy as the two sensible candidates on this issue.

Excuse me Baroness, but by

Excuse me Baroness, but by ALL polls, either 95 or 96% of black voters voted FOR Obama. I guess only 4 or 5% of blacks can "think for themsleves" by your reasoning, which by the way, doesn't show much reasoning at all. But it DOES show who is racist.

Humbleopinion, you need to use spell check before you post. Being racist was not even a part of the dialogue. If you have an issue with voting for President Obama and don't like it... MOVE!

Excuse me, humbleopinion, I

Excuse me, humbleopinion, I didn't put a figure on it, I said SOME people can vote for themselves and I'm trying to encourage MORE people to do so. And I can't read minds so there is no sure way to tell what voters are racist or just ignorant, or some combination and degree of the two. By my reasoning AND MY humble opinion your comment that I didn't "show much reasoning at all" is rude, untrue and I'm wondering now if yours was a prejudiced and racist opinion.
