GREENWOOD, S.C. — Authorities say a donkey in a South Carolina pasture was killed by a hunter who thought the animal was a deer.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reported that the donkey had just been caught by an animal rescuer and placed in the Greenwood County pasture when it was found dead Wednesday.

The donkey's new owner said he put the animal in the pasture to help protect his goats from wild dogs.

Animal rescuer Joe Mann says he caught the donkey after finding it running wild in Abbeville County.

What was someone doing hunting in a pasture where you have animals. An a donkey looks nothing like a deer. This person would be a dangerous hunting partner.

tazkarz

must a been mr magoo hunting

belle

what was he doing hunting on someone else's property? did he have permission? And you are correct, he should have his license revoked until he passes a hunter safety course.

JohnTaurus

This person would purchase a "Feces Sandwich" if it were advertised as "Good for You and made from recycled nutrients".

Fool!! Must be an immigrant from Moronica.

Our old mule barn down in Wheeler County was shot at close range with a shotgun (it blew out a hole about the size of a softball;) I guess it looked like a deer. My no hunting and no trespassing signs were shot; I guess they look like deer.

Dick Cheney strikes again!

WhippingPost

The tag office in northern Illinois, where I once lived, has a picture of an all black Holstein calf and a large Nubian-cross goat on the wall. Both were brought in to be tagged as deer.

milfaygirl

This is so scary. It's not safe to be out in the country.

Mydoggie

Come on. How could you mistake those ears! But then, if your MO is "shoot first, then look," is it any wonder that the poor donkey's ears were irrelevant.

DEVGRU

SusieQ - It's not unusual to hunt for deer in pastures with other animals. You just have to know what you are doing and apparently this idiot didn't.

Ashtray

Being a hunter of over 40 years, people like this that go out with guns under the name of hunting scare me. Idoit should be locked up in a hospital.
"milfaygirl" is right about sometimes is it not safe to live in the country. Normally the last weekend of the season these idiots come out in force and shoot up the countryside. And 99% of the time they are not locals to the area but out of staters.

Georgialina

I bet this was no mistake. Damn Fool thought it would be funny to shoot the donkey since he had not bagged anything all season. When he got caught he probably came up with the "Oh Gee, I thought it was a deer" defense. Too bad today is not the season opener for idiots. Now thats a hunt I would gladly buy a license for !!!!

Grasshopper

Had to be one of them deir yankees to mistake a donkey for a deer.

mable8

If the guy can't tell a deer from a donkey, he shouldn't be hunting. He needs to pay for the donkey and give up his hunting rifle.

The Big O

Probably thought it was the Democrat's mascot....

My heart felt sympathy goes out to the person who was trying to help save the donkey. Imagine the nightmare . This man went out of his way to save the donkey just to have it destroyed by a hunter. Donkeys, poneys and other live stock make wonderful pets. It is so easy to get attached to them. I hope that the hunter has the decency to come forward and beg forgivness.

Years ago an idiotic hunter shot my horse - he thought it looked like a deer. Luckily, he wasn't a good shot and the horse recovered. The hunter was required to pay all vet bills, which were not cheap. It would have been better to take a hunter's safety course and get to know what a deer actually looked like before attempting to shoot one.

Another fool in the woods with a gun. Killing every kind of wild life, farm animals and just shooting at things for fun. They describe themselves as sportsmen but most have no respect for other people's property or belongings. It's risky to be in the outdoors with them. We're an urban society and not a wild backwoods anymore. Its hard to find a place where people, their personal property, and their animals are out of rifle range. We have a professional and standing military and society does not depend on a scruffy citizen's militia and their firearms to defend the country. We're stuck with fools but we can disarm them. Gun control is long overdue.

ispy4u

Taylor,I was thinking the exact same thing.LMAO

robbie1

My first question when I read this was, "Mr Cheney's whereabouts?", but I wondered how long it would take for someone to bring up gun control. The British had a standing military too. I think Gas misses the intent behind the right to bear arms. Whoever shot the donkey also misses the intent behind hunting...

BREAKING: Hunter mistaken for intelligent lifeform.

robbie1

Did they shoot him too?

midget115

I seriously think anyone could tell a donkey from a deer. Unless they were drunk. I don't understand why people buy a license and then go out and shoot an innocent animal as a donkey. Well I hope they are made to pay for the animal once they found out who this jack leg is. But God knows who shoot this poor donkey and he will make them pay for the death of this animal.

Must have been a Republican!

strugglingcollegestudent

gaspringwater, do you not realize what RESPONSIBLE hunters do for you. just because one bad apple tainted the sportsman outlook, you are going to bash the group that believe in fair chase, wait.. you probably don't know what that is. although it's a drop in a bucket, imagine how many deer you'd be hitting with your vehicle if hunter's weren't present. RESPONSIBLE hunters are SAVING you money.

andywarhol

Yeah us yanks must've done it, because our dear that weigh in over 200 lbs are a whole lot different than your dwarf deer here in CSRA. Up North we're a bunch of HS drop outs and red necks. LOL Southern Pride baby!

trouble706isBack

andywarhol, the issue here is DEER, not DEAR. It is not the problem of those in the south if your DEAR is over 200 lbs.

strugglingcollegestudent

trouble, i believe he was being sarcastic.

Grasshopper

Leave it to a yankee, making an A$$ out of the story.

gaspringwater

strugglingcollegestudent - Please excuse me but I've heard that rationale before. Slaughtering wildlife is doing them a favor! And doing everybody else a service too. I don't wish to offend you but that's moron. We're infested with deer because nitwits with guns, traps and poisons have nearly exterminated the deer's natural predators. Stop killing the bobcats, coyotes, wolves, mountain lions, if they're out there, and other animal that preys on deer. Let the preditors eat them and then the deer infestation will diminish. Prey and predator balance existed for eons before fools with guns came along. But guns are going to be abolished and it's just a matter of time before a
barbaric chapter in our history is closed. Not liberals but stupid idiotic hunters and gun violence will cause society to get rid of your guns. I'm not the most literate person I know but off hand I don't know anywhere else in the world that tolerates such lunacy.
