A 16-year-old Lakeside High School student was arrested Thursday morning after lifting a girl’s skirt in a crowded hallway.

Columbia County Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said deputies were called to the school about 11 a.m. Thursday. The teen had been walking behind another 16-year-old during class changes when he grabbed the girl’s skirt and lifted it to chest-height, Capt. Morris said.

The incident occurred in full view of other students and staff members in the hallway and was captured on the school’s surveillance video, Capt. Morris said.

The teen was taken into custody as a juvenile and charged with one misdemeanor count of sexual battery, Capt. Morris said. He later was released to his parents.

Lakeside High School Principal Jeff Carney said in an e-mail that the student is suspended and faces a school disciplinary charge of public indecency, “which carries the disposition of being referred to the hearing officer for possible long-term suspension which would mean for the rest of the semester.”

A disciplinary hearing hasn’t been set but must be held within 10 school days, Dr. Carney said.

Yep... that definately warrants being arrested... NOT!!!

School administrators have totally lost their marbles. This could have been handled administratively at school. Especially with a 16 year old. All he needs is a good butt whipping.

gunnerhall123

If he is found guilty will have to register as a sex offender?

SnowBallCity

"School administrators have totally lost their marbles." I'm beginning to believe that. It appears administrators' jobs have become one of diverting any possible liability rather than administer their school. Paranoid wimps comes to mind. In todays climate, I would have been jailed for some of my high school antics. Apparently being suspended from school isn't an option any more? Just call the police, they'll take care of it. What exactly is an administrators job these days.

UrbanMeyerHater

Jeff Carney - Stand your [filtered word] up and attempt to help this kid especially if it his first offense. Keep the disipline in house and make it severe but for Gods sake dont allow this kid to get a CRIMINAL RECORD!!!

School administrators have no discretion on applying discipline. Everything is spelled out for them in policy manuals. They look up the policy. and it tells them what to do. There is little decision making in schools today for teachers or administrators. Teachers are told what to teach and administrators are told how to handle discipline. Schools are micro-managed by education's bureaucrats in the district, state, and federal government who think up policy behind desks to justify their jobs.

Thank God I graduated high school ~ 30 years ago... man-o-man the criminal record I and my friends, both girls and boys, might have today. Yes, it shouldn't have happened but it don't rise to the level of sexual criminal activity.

Dan White

Yea, Batman, remember when the freshman girls thought it was cool to have a senior boyfriend. Those seniors will be in jail today for child molestation.

Rob Pavey

as severe as this sounds, the harsh action will get the message out that girls should be able to walk the halls at school without boys grabbing them and pulling their clothes up.

Delirious58

his 1st offense?
do the crime you serve the time

mrpcez

I guess I am in the minority here. I am thinking of my daughter and would never want her rights and privacy to be violated like that. Not to mention the embarrassment the 16 year old girl has to deal with. The punishment has to be severe enough in order to ensure the offender (as well as other boys) understands the offense is SERIOUS, will not be tolerated, and is criminal in nature. A school suspense to me in this case would be a slap on the hand (many like being suspended) and not indicate the severity of the act.

DancinChick

So what if its his 1st offense!! I dont care what it takes, but a 2nd offense needs to be prevented. No one on here seems to be thinking of this poor VERY YOUNG girl who is completely mortified and humiliated!!! This article says EVERYONE saw, can you imagine how this makes her feel? I dont think suspension is harsh enough for this pervert.

csrawill

What a retarded boy. He deserves this. Lakeside has rules so that they can keep the learning curve up. Lakeside is not the place for this. Lakeside has the best policies in the county. Keep it coming Dr. Carney

montega12

well to be quite honest about it it was wrong but in case you havent seen myspace and facebook these young girls pose for pictures in their underwear all the time or have pictures of themselves flashing and these pictures go out to thousands so yes he should get suspended but yall got to realize this is the norm these days

skelly7483

I used to carry a pocketknife and I never stabbed anybody. I did many "pranks" on girls and guys. I have had my pants pulled down to my ankles in the lunchroom "referred to as beind pantsed". It was embaressing, but so what. People are to prude these days. Yeah I feel sorry for the girl. Yes the boy is a moron. Yes he should get in trouble, but leave the cops out of it. I just went to my 10 year reunion. When I was in school they were starting to get crazy. I got suspended for 10 days for calling a teacher a bit**. Its dumb. They are more worried about what you wear then teaching you. They want everyone to be the same, and no one to express drifferences. Sounds like Communism to me. ( or is that OBAMAISM ).

bankgirl

i agree you dancinchick.. if we don't show these young boys that they can't treat girls that way how do you think they will treat them in the future.. if this was one of y'alls daughters that it happened to y'all wouldn't be so understanding with it being a 1st offense or not..

Rose

Pulling up that girl's dress should give him serious time in ydc.

soldout

As short as the shirts are now the crime seems without reason

Drama Mamma

i think he deserves whatever he gets. How would he like if someone came along and pulled his pants down in front of everyone like he did that young lady's skirt. That was TOTALLY uncalled for.

justthefacts

He should have to apologize and serve a two week suspension.

montega12

well drama when i was in school we did pranks like that in gym gettin pansed. ive seen other girls lift their friends shirts up the whole point is cops dont need to be involved. this sixteen year old gets convicted he is a sex offender for the rest of his life basically his life is over. ill home school my kids anyway one part of being young is stupid spur of the moment decisions i wish i coulda seen some of crap you prudes did in middle and high school i bet some did alot worse than this kid

stumpjumper

For his punishment, send him to my house for 2 wks. and I'll make adifferent person out of him or I'll be in jail, one or the other. He'll wish he'd never seen a young lady, let alone up her dress. I'm from the old school.......
Spare the rod, spoil the child.

scoobynews

Did it occur to any of you "men" that are complaining that it was most likely her PARENTS that insisted on the cops being called? The first people that are notified in an incident such as this is the parents. Regardless of who called this was a crime. According to all of you in defense of this young man, I guess it is ok for him to go to the mall, park, or any other public area to pull up skirts of young women. This is how perverts start out doing minor stuff then moving on to the big stuff like assault and rape. I have seen rants on here before about how you hate the mall because of the way the young people dress do you really want to see skirts flying up everywhere because of perverts like this. You obviously do not see the seriousness of the situation. For the person that remarked about Face book, that is also ignorant assumptions on your part. None of you KNOW this girl at all or her morals.

montega12

oh god scooby! what now the kid is a serial rapist now if he has those tendencies this aint gonna do anything to stop that now

DancinChick

Wow montega12 what great logic you have there. Because some girls post skanky pictures on their myspace and facebook sites then that must mean ALL girls are skanky and just deserve to have there skirts pulled up and flash the world because they don't care.

AhsanMinnik

If he had pulled up her skirt in a secluded area, I can see how this might be a real issue of concern. Pulling a joke in a crowded hallway doesn't meet the "arrest" threshold for me. I've seen bikinis fall off in the school pool during gym class, nobody went to jail.

lisakc

Has the world gone nuts?? This kid shouldn't have done that, it was wrong. He deserves disciplinary action, probably suspension from school, but to call the police and have him arrested? Geez people, get a grip.

themaninthemirror

Some school administrator is trying to make a name for themselves. This does not rise to the level of criminal activity. A foolish prank, yes, criminal. no.

All of these comments reflect what is wrong with the system. What you have here is a prank. Everyone begins to over analyze the issue and they honestly believe that if something isnt done now this kid will grow up to be a hairy old man asking 5 year old girls to reach into his pocket for candy. the theory is we must protect our children. I mean who doesnt want to protect the children. this leads to laws being created and strengthened to the point of absurdity. then we have school admisistratoprs who are required to report a "crime", he cant ignore it. we have an elected sheriff who has to create a report and arrest someone who violates the law. then we have an elected district attonrey who must prosecute the crimes referred to her by law enforcement. then we have judges who must punish severely the guilty once a conviction occures. all of these elected officials would get hammered in the press if not the polls if they looked the other way or gave a break to something like this, especially if the one in a thousand chance that the kid really turns out to be a child molester. final result - you have thousands of over punished "pranks" that should have never been prosecuted
