A Greenbrier High School student’s father discovered him dead Monday evening at the school’s running track.

Scott Gillen, 17, was found by his father, Kevin Gillen, sometime after 10 p.m. at the school lying face down on the track, said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.

Mr. Gillen, of the 400 block of Armstrong Way in Evans, attempted to revive his son using CPR and he called 911. Emergency responders took Scott to Doctors Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:31 a.m., officials said.

“(Mr. Gillen) said he was working toward a fitness badge for Eagle Scouts,” Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison said. “He rotated running with weight lifting. Last night, he went up to the track to run alone and was gone longer than (Mr. Gillen) expected.”

When Mr. Gillen arrived at the track, he found his son’s car, but couldn’t see him. He started to circle the track and then found him collapsed on the surface, Ms. Garrison said.

Scott had a medical history of asthma, but it is unknown if that contributed to his death, Ms. Garrison said. His parents told Ms. Garrison that Scott had not had any asthma-related issues in a long time and was not taking any medications for the condition.

An autopsy was performed today, but the results are inconclusive until a toxicology test and tests on tissue samples are conducted, Ms. Garrison said. Those tests can take more than six weeks to complete.

“He was a good-looking fellow; healthy looking,” Ms. Garrison said. “I guess we just don’t ever know.”

School officials announced this afternoon that counselors were available at the school for any student needing one. A phone message left today with Greenbrier Principal Margie Hamilton was not immediately returned.

So sad; hopefully if there

So sad; hopefully if there is a pattern to this happening to young people we can find the source and it can be stopped. I know in general our diets are getting worse and worse but only a long-term study could tell the effect on young people. May the family be blessed with peace that only God can provide. A former football player told me young people seem to be losing stamina vs what they had 25 years ago but he isn't sure of all the causes.

Hello, this is Ryan Mason. I

Hello, this is Ryan Mason. I went to Middle School with Scott. Me and him were in the same homeroom and English class with Mrs. Goode. We hung out in the same group of people so I got a chance to know him quite well. He was a very fun kid to be around and he always knew how to make people laugh I will truly miss him. Peace be with the Gillen family.

bunny17, I mean no disrespect

bunny17, I mean no disrespect but this is bugging me. The proper English is "Him and I were in the same homeroom", not Me and him. I'm sorry for the lost of your friend and pray God gives strength and peace to the Gillen family. I can think of nothing worse than to loose a child.

My heart hurts to hear this

My heart hurts to hear this story. My own children run track, and it would not be unusual to find my son running late evening. I can not imagine the horror the father felt finding his son. I pray for God's comfort and grace to fill this family and help them make it day by day as they accept this tragedy. I also pray that entire school receive comfort at the time of another sorrow for the student body at large. Only good die you as Mr. Joel said. I thank God that I am not the striken with a pain such as this. I wish there was more I could do to help those that are hurting because of the unexpected death of this young man.

I went rappelling and

I went rappelling and climbing with Scott at the aqueduct this weekend. He is an amazing young man and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He had a wonderful attitude and was an outstanding person. He was a leader in our youth group. He was close to God and I trust that he is now in arms of the Savior.

I will post more about his funeral when I know more.

JefferyJohnson, thank you for

JefferyJohnson, thank you for your post. To know this young man was a child of God, brings peace knowing that when he took his last breathe he was standing before the Father. I hope that his family knows God and have the assurance that He will get them through this time.

This story is just so sad,

This story is just so sad, seems like he was a very good young man. My sympathy to the friends who have lost him as well. May God help you all, friends and family, to ease your pain, though I know it will never go away. I can't imagine what you all must be going through, especially the parents. It's a pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
