A middle-age man was sent to the hospital after he wrecked his Suzuki motorcycle on Calhoun Expressway on this afternoon.
Richmond County sheriffs Cpl. Russell Schaffer said the accident occurred at 4:48 p.m. in the eastbound lane of Calhoun Expressway. According to witnesses, the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed in the right lane and tried to pass a car by going onto the shoulder. He hit the retaining wall, Cpl. Schaffer said.
Paramedics arrived and administered CPR. The man was taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown, Cpl. Schaffer said.
No drugs or alcohol is suspected in the accident, Cpl. Schaffer said.
Regardless, AhsanMinnik, the accident in question is not about being middle-aged, it is about experience and respecting the rules of the road, and respecting your machine, for no one acts more foolish than young white and black men with little or no experience riding and getting out there splitting lanes, wearing flip-flops and shorts, weaving in and out of traffic, doing 70-80 down Washington Rd. ,Peach Orchard Road and particularly Lumpkin Rd. ( especially between 12:30-2:00A.M. ). I have been riding 34-years and have had my share of road rash, near misses, and the ever present "cager" excuse, "I didn't see him",B/S. The sad part is we all get bunched together in the stats, the young rice-grinding idiots and we old schoolers who live this life and ride safe.
There's plenty of excitement to riding without adding silliness to it. Passing on the right shoulder is just nuts. Drains, trash and the ever present wall are just no fun.
My hubby shakes his head when he sees one of these idiots wearing tshirt, shorts, and flip flops. He has to at all times even off post wear pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves, and a reflective band. And some of these guys are really stupid on a bike. Hope he is okay.
There is nothing wrong with middle aged men riding "crotch rockets". I'm in my mid 50's and ride a GSXR1300. I too have had my share of close calls but so far I haven't laid a bike down since I was 15 riding a dirt bike on the street. It's all about common sense, which seems to be non-existent in many people these days.....I guess me included as I've had this bike to a shade over 170 on I-20.
Just goes to show you that age doesn't matter when you do stupid things.
humbleopinion, if you have been 170 mph on I-20 you do not deserve to have a permit to drive anything.
I agree tnjsw if he was going that fast he needs to turn in his motorcycle license to the DMV. Humble if you really did 170 on I -20 you do not deserve to be riding a motorcycle....Riders like you give motorcycle riders bad name
And you think 170 (calling the BS card to) is smart and safe?? I suppose you get mad when someone pulls out in front of you. Well I wouldn't really complain if you drive that fast people cant' see you one minute noone is coming up and the next here you come driving by like a blur. I hope the 170 was just a smart crack comment.
If you believe 170 on I-20, then you should know me travelled 145 down the Augusta canal in me Queen Annes Revenge galleon.
Decembe 31, 1981 @ 6:45 in the morning , I was hit head on by a drunk driver on Barton Chapel road , I was trying to get to work in the rain , have not road one since , I have a bad leg, knee , and now even neck problems.. I loved riding but dont want any more of it !!
Call BS all you like. My Hayabusa has 194 hp and only weights 485 lbs. These bikes have been ridden in excess of 190 mph and some claim 200. Was it stupid to hit 170 on I-20 heading west out of Thompson? No doubt. It's not something I do everyday, but when I do ride I almost always crank it to 120 on the highway. It accelerates like you can't imagine and takes just a few seconds to jump from 80 to 120. I've been riding since I was about 8 years old, learning on a dirt bike on my family property. If you don't believe how fast these bike are and how quickly they accelerate, look up the story of the RCPD officer who was stopped, ticketed and then fired for hitting about 130 on 13th street bridge over the river.......
My mistake here. In Septermber 2003 officer Kevin Brown RESIGNED after being ticked for going 110 in a 35 zone on the bridge. He knew he was going to be fired. I guess my memory is going in my old age.
I have no doubt a hayabusa will easily do 170 on the highway, but I feel like you would know its a gsx1300r and not a gsxr1300 if you actually own one. It may seem inconsequential to most people, but anyone with a slight interest in motorcycles knows there is no gsxr1300.
This guy is probably dead by now if he went to MCG. I was taken there after my motorcycle accident and the care was not good.
humbleo ..... I love my bike also, BUT, 120 on any public road steers your future to a closed casket buddy.
As a former FF/EMT, guys like Humble need to watch graphic videos of what idiots like them go through when they are unlucky enough to survive a high speed crash. Ive picked a couple of them up off the ground with my fire dept...one of them had a leg that was fractured with bone sticking out in 3 places. His head injuries made him combative and it took 5 of us to hold this guy down. He lost his leg and I believe he had some permanent brain injuries. He was wearing a helmet, but he impacted hard enough that it split.
A friend laid a bike down, riding responsibly- his passenger (wife) leaned when he turned throwing him off balance. He suffered a serious break to his leg and will forever have a limp now.
FF I suffered a serious break to my leg. This doesn't mean I will always have a limp ...
Humble you are still a freakin idiot. Your parents must have dropped you on your head when you born. My son has a crotch rocket that can easly do that speed. But he has enough respect for the law and himself then to do something as stupid as you. Still say you need to turn in your license because you are to damn stupid to have one
I'll call BS on the folks who say MCG has a bad trauma center. I have a close friend who was hit head on on his Harley in Feb. 2000. He had two broken femurs, one broken arm, severed big toe, ruptured spleen and a ruptured abdominal aorta. He didn't have a pulse when EMT's arrived. Long story short, they (paramedics and the trauma staff) saved him. He was back on his feet in a couple months and back on his Harley shortly after that, the same one he was riding when he was hit (with the help of his friends and brothers.) And as for the rider in this news article, he should have known better than to pass on the shoulder. It's no wonder that trauma nurses call crotch rockets "donor cycles."
Humble are you on crank or crack? ffaz71 sounds very knowledgeable and could help you. At 170mph you organ donor card is worthless.
I would just like to say in defence of the motorcycle rider involved in this accident, that he was not passing anyone on the shoulder of the road. He was not even on the shoulder of the road.
